Unfortunately as others have said you cannot change the laws of physics, even if BT were to put in another line with 53db downstream line attenuation it would hardly make any difference, so you can complain all you want it will not change anything, if you want a faster speed the only choice is move nearer to the exchange.

Right. See the Indian guy told me on the phone i could get a better line if i phoned sales and ordered another one, so i phoned sales and they said no and put me back through to technical. Why didnt they just say what you just have. I was under the impression another line would fix it from what he said.

Your speed depends on the distance you are from the exchange, the further away the slower the speed, putting another line in is not going to change that distance so how can it increase your speed.

By the way BT are only obliged to supply a phone line and are not under any obligation to supply you with with a line for broadband, if you cannot get broadband then as far as they are concerned, tough!!!

So if he had told me another line will make no difference and it is all based on how far from exchange u are then it would have been clearer.
    thanks cajef.

    its still annoying.

Annoying but hardly worth ranting about.

A quick search on any forum regarding broadband would have enlightened you to the facts and may have reduced your blood pressure.

The key factor in any broadband speed is the phrase "up to"

If you don't like BT - then leave them

in realtion to changing to another provider i might do, i wont get any higher speed as BT own the line apparently. However i bet i get a damn site better customer service and perhaps a british call centre.
  • SamKnows is a useful site for ADSL information. I can't post links as a newbie member but Google for "samknows" and click Exchange Mapping down the left hand side of the resulting site.

Enter your postcode, click on your road on the map, optionally enter your house number (don't think that makes any difference) and click Check. It'll tell you roughly what speed you should expect from the different technologies.

If it tells you to expect vastly more than 2Mbps (say, 5Mbps or more), then you may have a fault which could be fixed, but 2 miles is a fairly long way in terms of ADSL so I suspect it's about right.

Routers should sync with a noise margin down to around 7 db, yours is 9.3db which suggests that either you have a noisy line or BT have reduced the speed to get it stable.
You could try two things before ringing BT again.
Unscrew the faceplate on your master socket and connect to the test socket, this will eliminate any extensions you have wired to the faceplate.
Recheck your router stats, if any improvement you need to look at your extension wiring, removing the bell wire(pin 3) is a standard fix.

Next disconnect everything except one phone and listen to your dial tone, if it seems noisy do a quiet line test Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)

You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no pops, clicks, whistles, buzzing etc

If there are get onto BT and get them to sort it.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
