As I said before, I would be careful if you run homebrew software from your wii and you want to go online with it. 1 poster on here seemed to disagree with what I was saying, but I have seen many warnings about going online with the wii and automatic updates being forced onto the wii. Also the point they made about NTSC games isn't exactly true, because when new games come out on the wii with updates on them, new software comes up to counter act this. This has recently been the case with games such as Indiana Jones, or the Wii Resort with wii motion plus. The wii motion plus game required new software to be uploaded to the wii, this is possible without using the internet or original game discs etc. All information is freely available on the internet. The impression I got was, the nintendo updates alter the CIOS which are used to allow you to play homebrew, backups, dvds, on your wii. The main reason for updates seems to be to stop people using homebrew etc, but if nintendo let people use the wii to it's full capacity, ie playing dvds, people may stop using homebrew.... Personally I would steer clear of using the internet on your wii if you use homebrew or backups.

I always keep my wii up to date with automatic updates and have never had problems with playing backups.

Generally, I use a thing called BrickBlocker to remove any updates from backup disks I use. This prevents any dodgy NTSC updates being applied.

However, I have found one or two disks where you have to leave the backup on and apply it. (E.g mario kart installs a patch).

If you do a quick search on google, you will see that nintendo updates do affect homebrew programmes such as the homebrew channel.

I don't want to get into the ins and outs of it.

My point was just to be cautious of using the internet through your wii and automatic updates which are applied when you go online with nintendo.

As far as I remember it was free to older users because it was in BETA and you got a free upgrade to the full product. For all us other wii NOOBIES it cost 5 hundred stars but now we get them back and get to use the new updated version as well

Thanks for the info, look forward to a better browser than the ruddy mess the Opera one is on the Wii at present.

Particularly irritating to have been forced to spend 500 (£3.50) on it in the first place.

Has anyone got the link to the actual Nintendo announcement on this?

  • However, you will still need an internet connection at home to access the internet through your wii.

    Of course!!!!

The Internet Channel was free when the Wii was first released, then they made it chargeable shortly before I got mine. For this reason I refused to download it and had a right moan at Nintendo about it. I cheekily asked for a free download as a goodwill gesture, and they politely refused. I wonder why they've had a sudden change of heart.... perhaps the release of the PS3 slim has got them worried?
  • Hi I was thinking of downloading this to our wii but I'm new to all this and all the mention of upgrades and homebrew has got me totally confused! Can anyone explain? We have just ordered a wireless router to use with our laptop so will this work for the wii and xbox too? Thanks

I refused to pay too. I think to be honest amount of games I bought they should provider some free content including some old games

I am tempted to get homebrew as its a older version but has new firmware in it

I haven't got a Wii, but it looks like Nintendo have cottoned onto the fact that unless somebody connects their console it to the internet, they have no means of updating the firmware to block the use of pirated games, as they tried recently with the DSi, with partial success.

The pittance they would make by charging people for access is far outweighed by the revenue they would recoup from being able to successfully stop people from playing "back-ups" of games they don't actually own.

Or am I just reading too much into it, old cynic that I am!

    :D
;24751403]Only thing is its a PITA without a keyboard. Takes ages to spell out every char using the wii remote...
If you do a search on Amazon, you can buy some keyboards that will work on the Wii.
