It's a Midlands thing too - "smashed egg in a cup" with bread and buter straight after school with a cup of tea.

My Mum always used to make this for us when were ill as kids, she used to put it in an empty marge/butter tub(probably so we wouldn't break the dish cause we were having it on a tray in bed)
we called it "poorly chucky eggs"
I knew my now husband was the one many years ago when he made them for me when I was ill,I had only ever mentioned it once.
This thread had brought a little tear to my eye as it brings back memories of "Mam and Dad" who are no longer with us.

You can do the float test. A glass of water and drop the egg in. If it sinks it's ok, if it's the middle it's still do-able, if it floats it's a goner.
  • How funny to see this thread! We just had egg and chips. I poach the egg, though. It's a bit healthier and I really don't like the frilly bits on a fried egg. We are having a lot of chips at the moment because our home-grown potatoes need eating up. I do the parboiling and then putting them on a hot, oiled baking tray method. Yum!
