Hi,
Sorry to hijack thread but it inspired me to buy an old Kenwood 901 off ebay. However I don't know what I'm doing wrong but all of my cakes (4 lots so far) have been disappointing- greasy and sunken in the middle. The same recipes come out perfect using my old electric hand whisk. I am using the K beater. Is it the speed I've set or the length of time I'm beating that's causing the problem?
Please someone help as I so want to love my Kenwood!0 -
I remember my mum buying a 701 years ago and always yearned for one. She told her friend and she let me have her 901 as it was no longer needed. It had stood for some time unused.
Well we got the mixer and my daughter, who hates cooking but likes gadgets, said she would make me a cake.
Off she went, following the instructions. I turned round to see her disappearing in a cloud, mixer going full blast.
Unfortunately it wasn't flour but smoke pouring from the back in a big way:eek: I rushed over, pulled out the plug and grabbed it whilst trying to blow out the flames, forgetting that it had a metal body. Two burnt hand - palms and fingers:mad:
Fortunately no other damage was done and the worktop survived. Please just be causious if you buy second hand and it has been unused for a while.
After this DH bought me a new brand new one but I secretly wish it was a 901. Daughter has not yet made a cake!Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me0 -

Your tread has really inspired me to buy an old Kenwood A701.
Does anyone know if the stainless steel bowl from A901 will fit A701 machine?
Hi yes - I bought a brand new steel bowl and it fits my 701 fine - see my picture to the side.0 -

ok, i cant see any reason why the mixer would have this affect, so what recipe are you using, and have you tried using your old mixer again, to see if if might be your oven that is in question?

Thanks for replying so quickly. It's definitely not the oven. I've had another think and I think it may be that I've started using Flora instead of butter or Stork (I read on another forum that someone always uses Flora for her Lemon Drizzle cake which everyone there raves about!). Perhaps Flora goes all greasy when beaten thoroughly. Will try again soon.
By the way does anyone have a spare instruction booklet for the 901: the Kenwood website doesn't have one online?0 -

:j Its over 40 years old, mum got it as a housewarming present when she moved into her present house in 1965, it's come to me pretty grubby, but I've just spent 3 hours cleaning it, and it looks quite good now - its a A701a according to the little metal plaque thing. It's come with a K beater and a balloon whisk, and a liquidiser. Now the liquidiser needs a new seal for the bottom and the top around the lid, I've seen packs of 3 of the ones for the bottom of the liquidiser, but I haven't seen any for the top, unless they come in a set that has a complete lid. Anyone help me with this? Also I've been looking on Ebay and have seen some juicers, anyone used one of these are they worth getting? I've been talking for ages about getting a juicer, would this be a better way of doing it. Any other attachments, I should have? already know I defo want a mill, for grinding coffee and herbs etc, but anything anyone else has used that they would recommend.
Thanks for any help and sorry for so many questions, I'm very excited about having this and want to make the most of it.0 -

yep it sounds like it could be the flora, i tend to find spreads are a bit too wet for cakes, and dont contain enough fat

whistler-alison wrote:It came on Saturday morning! Very early. I was supposed to be having a lay in and I heard someone open and shut the porch about 6.45. Of course I had to go and play with my new toy, so much for the lay in. Anyway, I'm very pleased with it. It is very clean and only a tiny bit of wear to the paint around the bowl which is to be expected probably. Not too noisy. Ran down to Sainsburys on Saturday after cleaning it and got some cream and made my own butter. So had fresh butter by 8.30! Whipped up eggs for scrambled eggs using some of the buter milk in them which made it really creamy. Then made some fairy cakes yesterday. The only problem I had was that when making the cakes, the beater seemed to be leaving some of the mixture unbeaten at the bottom of the bowl and I had to stop the machine and scrape it up. Is this normal or maybe I have to adjust the beater down a bit (I had to adjust the whisk up because it was knocking the bottom of the bowl). I also spent two and a half hours walking round a car boot sale yesterday looking for attachments, but didn't find anything. Anyway, stepped out my front door this morning and there was another parcel which would be the grater/slicer I have bought, so really wanted to stay home and play, but no such luck. Can't wait to get home and open it.:T
oooh Butter?!!! :T which attatchment do you use for that, the "k" beater? (I don't have a chef, I have a kenwood patissier which is like a baby version really, I have loads of other gadgets so daren't go for the chef

Hi yes. I used the K Beater. Do a search in the old style forum for making butter and you will see lots of info. There's a whole thread on it.0
