  • I think I should earn about £100k for the firm and I have far exceeded that, even a few thousand would be good enough as I have (in their words) been promoted earlier this year and there was no salary increase to reflect it. My role has changed so I could always use this as an excuse.

Gawd, I hate all this. Asked OH, his response "just say you want more money, simple, what's the problem" - oh to be a man!

"just say you want more money".......now why didn't I think of that one :rotfl:

  • haha, at least its direct. If you're going to use the 17.5k challenge, then at least up it to 20k for their benefit!!!
Maybe direct is good though, do what hypno suggests with the figures, and say, you've been doing the job for many months now, proved yourself so would they consider increasing your salary to reflect the new job. Better than talking around the subject and getting nowhere.

Have been told my appraisal is due at work (8 months overdue!!) and now need tips on how to ask for a payrise  Not had a rise since I started about 4 years ago, role has changed, I am earning a lot of money for the firm - but there has been all this awkwardness in the last few months so I feel strange about having an appraisal anyway. They have been very good to me and are generous (i.e. buy lunches, take us out etc) but I need extra money in my paypacket....how to ask without appearing greedy?

    Any tips gratefully received :)

In this instance IMD, you need to PREPARE really well. List all the elements of your role. List in percentages, the contribution you have made / saved the company. (I have made my place millions this year and for the past few years - but it is never linked proportionally to my payrise)

Also, research the jobs market and see how much your position would get you somewhere else. Knowing your actual worth to the company is key here.

Although your mouth will dry to the point your top lip will stick to your teeth and you will feel sick, this is your one opportunity to get what you want. And you have to grab it with both hands! This is not the time for modesty.

You need to act like you have balls of steel and remain calm and confident - it is a bit of a bluffing game - and explain that while you appreciate the large lunches, that does not pay the bills and you only want what you are worth, but you are worth more than you are getting paid.

Don't be flustered and certainly don't let them fob you off with any "recession" talk. If your company is throwing around bonuses, it can afford to pay you what you're worth!

At the end of the day, we can all be committed to the job, but we are all only there for one thing.

(Can you tell I'm geared up for mine in March? It will be like War and Peace :rotfl:)
  • Thank you for that Macgirl - will get a list sorted this weekend ready for next week. Just hate the thought of having to do it.

Very very cold this morning and nearly slipped down the hill to the train station

Nice homemade egg sandwiches for lunch, which I suspect stank the train out judging by the look on the man's face sat next to me as if I'd let one off :rotfl:Have also brought in chocolate from home so fingers crossed I won't have to spend any money today.

Have had to accept that I need to hire a carpet cleaner - again! Dog has made a real mess of the carpet and I think he is definitely toilet trained now, save for the very odd accident, so will attempt to freshen it up one more time. The kids have also contributed to mess on carpet (blackcurrant, lip gloss etc etc) and so I need to deal with that.

Really need to do some exercise today, my rear end is expanding!

there is an mse article on asking for a payrise - I read it - bit the bullet and asked for one at a previous company and got a £2K payrise and a £4K bonus increase! It is definitely worth giving it a go... Sadly in the current company I am not on that money but it was good while it lasted!

  • Still considering the payrise and working out some figures and pointers - scared - a lot!

Very busy weekend but kind of cheap(ish).

Stayed in Friday and tackled smelly carpet which is now pristine to the tune of £20 :j Ate chocolate to assist task

Saturday - had a lovely relaxing morning, made cakes with kids, watched TV and just chilled out then went out with some friends for a b'day drink/meal. They had been out earlier and I had agreed to meet them later to save money - very MSE of me :) Split food bill which was only £20 each for 3 courses and drink and drank very little. Got early train home and was a very very good girl.

Sunday - up bright and early and did a 10 mile race which I got a PB in :j Really really pleased with myself! Came home, washed, ironed, emptied Mr T's bags and made a lovely dinner for me and OH which we will eat shortly. Just sat down to relax and had a lovely weekend and feel good about the world!

Now back to the drawing board re the payrise thing.....

  • PB - is personal best, i.e. best time I've ever ever run in my life :D

Have done my list for meeting tomorrow:-

Worked out that I have exceeded the 3 x salary (inc bonus and NI contribution) by 7 x.

In two cases alone I've made a clear profit of £100k - complicated way that I have to work it out.

I am now on a new charging rate and am now at least earning them 5 x my salary on the basic lower charging rate (although on the whole I am charged on higher rate which would be 7 x basic salary).

No pay rise for 3 years.

Willing to attend courses for a higher qualification they have been badgering me about

I was "promoted" last year and have a higher role within the firm but no payrise....

I have worked my b*****ks off for 3 years and record the most time worked in the office!

    Hmmm, bet I bottle it.....

I don't know how it works in your firm, but certainly in mine, payrises are linked to individualperformance, rather than actual X times your salary... Therefore to say "I have streamlined x,y,z increasing company profits, by X" "Have taken on extra responsibilty, managing X budget or y numbers of people, driving team/ project forward to achieve x"

Also, many times everyone will get the same percentage ie: 3% increase. If some feel they have performed better and have a case for more, then they (and I include myself in this :o) have badgered for more!

Employers in most cases, don't offer profit share, they want people to work for as little as they can get away with - and so would you if it were your business. They'll know you are worth more and won't offer it to you unless you make it plain to them that you know your worth in the marketplace. If you can write it succinctly, in terms of how you have increased profits and that you have taken on extra responsibility without a salary increase - you have more than a fair case, I'd say.

Don't let worry for the sake of an awkward hour get in the way of earning what you should and paying off those debts quicker! Go in there and kick a*s (be cheeky and ask for slightly more than you want, then if they come in lower - bonus!)

Well done in the PB :T The behind can't have expanded that much ;)
    Have a good week x
