Where abouts in London do you live? It might be worth having a look on some property websites to get an idea of what the rents are like in your area. Also, you can use your household bills minus the debt repayments to give you an idea of whether it would be affordable. I assume it would be seeing as you are currently paying out so much each month of debt. What is your income like?

Anyway, I thought I would send you a little cyber treat (I won't tell if you eat it all, just save me a slice!!)....

Unfortunately Pete is on a business trip in Denmark at the moment, and wont be home for 10 days. Im feeling very lost without him, and very insecure.

If Pete were here tonight, he would put his arm around me and tell me to stop being a silly old woman, for worrying so much. :)

Jen we are all hear to put our arms round you while Pete is away - anytime you are feeling lost just log on here and we will all be there.:grouphug:

I'm really not sure how parents can treat a son this way.

Sadly Jen, I watched a relative treat their son this way until the day they popped their clogs - at 86 unfortunately! Too long an innings, believe me! I don't understand it either, but its horrid, isn't it.

Not an identical situation, but quite similar. The son hit his rock bottom 11 years before her death, but came out the other side and "managed" through the remaining years. A numb relief at the end.

What's important now is you and Pete. Try to channel what little energy you have to looking at selling up and renting - things that will make a positive impact on you, Pete and your finances. Leave the things that can't be changed for now - its hard - the anger and the upset, but its also sucking your strength away.

Once you start to regain strength, you maybe able to accept (but never agree with or understand) the situation with P-I-L and move on a little.

    Thinking of you, x

Just wanted to add my sympathies. What a God awful situation. I admire your restraint, personally I would have planned murder by now.

What doesn't break us makes us stronger. I'm not a religious freak but I do tend to thing things happen for a reason.

It might be worth looking into the 'what would happen if the mortgage wasn't able to be paid' scenario with regards to the parents flat. That would be MY first thought before the renting aspect came into play.

Whatever you do, I wish you well.

  • Ive wondered what would happen if we didnt pay the mortgage. I assume they'd sue us and we'd end up in a cardboard box. no idea. Too scared to ask anyone.

Who would sue you. The bank or his parents. What leg would his parents have. It sounds like you are paying all there bills. So you are paying council tax, electric and gas. I would stop paying the gas and electric let them get cut off.

If you can't afford to keep the all the payments what you are suppose to do. you should not be scrimping and saving so your partners parents can live a life of luxury.

And where would they get the money to sue. And to be truthful if I was judge and you came in to my court. I would be putting your partners parents in to local authority housing. As they have no right to bring you bankrupty.

And to be truthful why should you have to give up your home to let them live in luxury. Wrong wrong totally wrong.

    Yours

Have you an insurance policy that covers legal disputes?

    Could you contact your M.P.?

    Local papers?

If you went bankrupt - surely you could not be forced to put his parents over you as a couple?

    Have you contacted citizens advice?

  • No, we're not paying their bills as such, just the mortgage. But the fact that we pay that allows them to go and play golf, etc etc etc...and buy expensive gifts for their grandchildren (Pete's sisters kids).

Its no secret that we all want the best lives for ourselves that we can get. But 99% of us would never dream of having that great life if it was at the expense of someone else, especially a family member.

Well, meet Pete's mum and dad. They are the exception to the rule.

All I want from my life now is Pete, a roof over my head (any roof) and to stop this terrible worry. But they are making it so impossible that I cant even think straight any more.

Glad to hear that you are not paying household bills for them.

I agree what someone else said. If you have car/household insurance most have legal help as an added extra.

Why not give them a call and see what they say. But it is hard as you seem to have a legal contract. But I suppose you could claim that you signed it underduress (sp). I would call it something else as undue pressure was exerted.

I have to ask does your partners sister know what has been going on?
