If you want that offer I would contact them. I think that the bit were they say that children under 12 are not accepted is standard in their advertising and they don't take it out to make it more clear on the appropriate weeks. I don't know if I'm making sense - I think that it is just a standard paragraph that they use for every week whether it happens to be a child friendly week or not. I know it's about as clear as mud.

    could be, i suppose

offer is no good to me anyway though, as i dont have 7 days spare !
only need a 3 or 4 day break
Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk
    (MSE Andrea says ok!)
  • Those of you that have previously been to Lapand, did you go half board or self catering? There are some good deals out their for self catering but is the food expensive in the super markets or did you take lots of supplies from home. I have been looking at the Salla Cabins; anyone stayed there?

    Thanks,
    Nichola
  • Nicholajp, When I go I always end up doing a mixture of self catering and restaurants.
I havent been to Salla I`m afraid, but the shops seem to be much the same prices as the uk, at least they were last year, of course in the current climate I`m unsure.
I do take some things with me as I think it just saves me having to scout about for it, although in cabins when I have stayed in those there is always salt and pepper..but I still take it just incase.
There is a link for Salla that may be of use and shows two supermarkets in the list:
loma.salla.fi/en/ (add this at the begining http:// )

And this is a link to a webcam from Salla by the river Oulanka and you can see snow already!!!..
.erapalvelu.com/webkamera.php?lang=eng ( add the www at the begining)

I went half board and told the kids they don't eat lunch in Lapland.LOL!

It is pretty expensive especially now only one euro per pound was almost 1.5 when we went and was expensive then. If we were going self catering I would probably stash a few packs of noodles in my suitcase as we are a family of five. If you are a couple I suppose it doesn't matter so much.
:j Trytryagain FLYLADY - SAYE £700 each month Premium Bonds £713 Mortgage Was £100,000@20/6/08 now zilch 21/4/15:beer: WTL - 52 (I'll do it 4 MUM)
  • When we went we had half board but only made use of the evening meal, the breakfast was fine but we didn't want to get up too early and we prefered to go to the supermarket and get food there. It wasn't too expensive, we had one meal out and that cost a fortune so would always look to have food included if possible.
  • I have been to saariselka on the 4day/3night trip and it was excellent, all inclusive, including excursions and clothing, and we saw the northern lights! that was with esprit on 19 dec. well worth the money! we have also been to iso syote for the past 2 years running in jan and feb and the snow is fantastic! we stayed in log cabins in the forest and had our own open fire and saunas in the cabin! this was more for the snowboarding than santa though. it was self catering and there was only 1 supermarket so it was quite expensive, but the second time we took soups and noodles etc... and just ate out at lunch.
I can highly recommend the santa trip to saariselka though, my hubby wasnt pleased when i booked it because of the cost (around £2500 for 3 of us) but when we were there he was really impressed with it and said it was well worth the money, just to see our ds face when we found santa in his house in the woods, and he had the exact letter that we "posted" to him before we left!
Unfortunatley crystal are not going to iso syote this year from MAN so we have had to book somewhere else :(
    Go! its fab!
  • Hi all, thank you for all your feedback. We are 90% sure that we will be heading to Lapland, probably 1st week of January with our 8 year old, soon to be 9, daughter. Very excited. Just so hard trying to hang on for a bargain. Looking every day. Best price I have so far for the 3 of us is; £709 self catering, 7 nights, departing 3rd January - should I, shouldn't I, is the question???? Best HB hotel price I have is £1500, which is over double. Would if we self catered with a few meals out, spend £800? I don't think we would, do you?

Oh, were do you get all your warm layers from? Did you buy ski wear? I have been looking on ebay for ski jackets etc has anyone bought their outfits this way?

    Thank you soooo much,
    Nichola
  • Hi again Nicholajp;
I have always bought my items from Rohan, theres a discount place in milton Keynes.
    Rohan
    1-3 Knebworth Gate, Giffard Park, Milton Keynes, MK14 5QD. Milton Keynes Opening times: Mon - Sat 9.30am - 5.30pm Telephone: 01908 615407

Its cheaper than the normal rohan shops as its their outlet, around 50% off, sometimes more it depends.... However, I know there are a load of cheaper items from other shops but in 20 years I still have every item purchased and they are still wearable, not faded and still as durable, as does my husband, even my son and daughter have used the items for trips as they got older and could fit into them.

Their items are not dead trendy, nor in amazing colour schemes.. and this or that seasons must have, but if you tell the team where you are going they are extremely helpful and steer you to the correct items.
Mens superstriders are brilliant, wind water and everything proof it would seem..L
They do the same for women in all ranges as well..

oh and as with all rohan stuff it dries very quickly, and if you are in a cabin or even hotel in Lapland there are always *heated dry-rooms* for boots and kit.

Wherever you purchase your items, make sure that they are wind proof as well as the usual things, the wind can be just as cutting as you speed across a frozen lake.

I have been 5 times and always gone self catering - I don't like the idea of having to get dressed for breakfast and must prefer the freedom of self catering - I am also veggie and eating out in Finland is not the greatest if you are veggie

it can be expensive but you need to be savvy about it - last time we went on a last min deal I took out a load of meals that were frozen, stuff like curry, chili etc - as we were there for skiing we wanted simple and easy - one word of warning - soup is very expensive so watch the prices

as for salla - there is no supermarket there - only a small mini mark and it is not good enough for what you will need for a week stay - this is something taht the inghams website does not tell you and despite me asking them for the distance to the nearest larger supermarket, cost to get there and why they don't state this on line they are being cagie about replying

as for what to wear - go to https://www.lapland.fruitbandit.com
personally I would got second hand from ebay - you will get some great deals and follow the guide on the website above and you should be ok - remember though - if you are not skiing you will not need all the wicking fabrics mentioned in the website - also, a great place to get fleece middle layers is at primark - they have some great childrens PJ's that are fleece and are ideal for a mid layer
  • As mentioned in a previous post with the links, if you visit the link you then find more links one of which tells the distance and its 10 killometres in fact.
sallatunturi.fi/ .......this link has another link with a map, you can turn it to english, then there are drop down menues for even more information.
It is my experience that travel agents these days are not so on the ball, as they once were.

    salla supermarket
    Its name is the S-Market

    KUUSAMONTIE 17

    98900 SALLA
