  • Wow!
When we have been looking it's more like that price for 1 person :(

Is it always Finland for Lapland trips ? I would have thought Swedish Lapland offered better value for money (non Euro).

We were lucky, it was £249 per adult and both children went free, don't think it will ever come up at that price again but you never know. Our eldest is now 13 so will now be classed as an adult, even so if we can go for under £1,000 we would do it as it was a fantastic holiday. We were in Levi at the beginning of December and there was loads of snow, it did start to melt part way through and we could see the needles on the trees, but within a few hours more snow fell and it was all picture perfect again. We booked through Lastminute.com but it was an Inghams package.
  • yes, it is mainly finland for the lapland trips however, there are a few indie companies that do swedish lapland but they tend to be even more expensive and as for it being non euro will not save you any money as it's expensive when you get there (sweden that is)

for the week long stays go with inghams or neilsen ski - out of the school holidays there will be bargains to be had - the learn to snowboard packages are excellent too costing about £200 for 6 days of lessons and hire etc

there are lots of resorts to go to in finland - just be mindful of when you want to go as earlier on the more south you are the less likely there is of naturaly snow - also - inghams have just introduced salla as a resort - problem is that there is no supermarket there so look into the resorts before you book - if you also want some night life etc then maybe levi is best - if you want village woodlands then yllas but if you want a mixture of the two then saariselka can offer you that - my fav place is saariselka but it's an additional 3 hour bus journey after the flight - well worth it though

wow poe.tuesday, you certainly know your stuff
i think i chatted with you earlier in the year about booking lapland, and waiting for a good deal to come up.
looks like its still too early, so i'm happy to wait a bit.

can you recommend a good resort for cabins, rather than hotels.
we very much like the idea of a kind of centerparcs log cabin in the snow, with santa claus just down the road instead of a great big swimming pool !!

also we are in 2 minds about whether to do 3nights/4days or 2 nights/3days.
looking on a few websites, it seems the extra day could be a bit of a waste, and just an opportunity to shop and mess about in the snow, but there is not alot of difference in the overall price, so could actually be worth it:confused:

  • Hi Inspector Monkfish, I would go for as long as you can, we went for a week and we didn't get bored at all, there is only limited daylight so we found we slept longer than normal and we did the dog sledging one day, reindeer rides another and then one day we did the snow mobiles. We then spent a couple of days practicsing skiing but we found it very tiring and decided that it was not for us. We were in Levi and we found this a great resort, you can just go up on the ski lifts to get an idea of the runs available but when we went it was so dark we couldn't see much apart from a lot of snow and ice. We were at the Crazy Reindeer hotel and this was great, we up-graded to a bigger room and the children had a room each, we also had a kitchen as well as a large lounge and two bathrooms, one of which had our own sauna. If we went back we would go for a week again as it was just so good. HTH.

  • you are going to have to paid through the nose for a santa break however, if you look at last min there are some on there - otherwise look at inghams - they also offer shorter breaks but the prices you pay are the same as week long stays

new year is aways a busy time and given that you only need to take of 3 days to get a week off maybe this is something you can wrangle at work? however, even if you do, you still may not get any deals

if you decide to go after the new year then inghams is going to be your best bet - you need to decide on which resort you like

I have been to saariselka, yllas and levi and they are in my order of preference - saariselka is magical and there is so much snow there !

what age are your children, what are your dates, where are you based and more importantly, what's yoru budget?

if you leave it with me and I will see what I can find for you - also, let me know if you are willing to go in the new year instead as this will be much cheaper

    hi there
    thanks for your reply poe

well, we def want to go before christmas, for the whole 'meet santa' thing
so we can rule out anything after christmas

    kids are 6 & 11

i would say budget would be £2,500 max

aside from all the typical adventures, like husky rides, reindeers and skidoos etc, i know Mrs IM would really love to see the northern lights.

i think a log cabin would also be preferable, although not a neccessity.

i have checked out lastminute.com, and there are a couple of 4 day trips on there, but they all take up 3 weekdays, so i can't do them!
(although i may be able to sort something out at work)

thanks again for all your advice
    regards
    IM

  • Hi poe.tuesday, you say it is cheaper to go in the new year, if you see anything would you please let me know. Our children are 13 and 11 and we could take them out of school for a few days so we would like to go for a week, last time we went we bought all the skiing stuff and it seems a shame not to use it. I would appreciate your help. Thanks.
  • anyone know anything about Canterbury Travel?
they just quoted me just short of £5k, for what it seems everyone else is quoting half that !!

  • ah yes, this is canterbury that are apparently cancelling trips !!!

leave it with me for a bit and I will see what I can find

I will always recommend that you go for a week not in school holidays, the deals are fab - I have now done 3 last min deals - the last one was to saariselka, the week before the feb half term and it cost me £160 each for flights, transfers and a cabin

monkfish - I know you want to go for the whole christmas thing, would you do christmas week if it comes up cheap? and the santa stuff carries on into the new year so would you concider that given this info?
  • Hi Inspector, just did a quick check on Lastminute.com and there is a holiday on there for 4 nights, going from Gatwick on 2nd December for £1876

    http://www.lastminute.com/site/travel/holidays/holiday-availability.html?skin=lmnukgoogle&dim46=2&dimension45=-1&destText=&ERROR=JUD038&maxOffset=0&children=0&adults=2&searchType=basic&dim14=258%2C1-5+nights&depDay=0&expandThreshold=5&productId=810946686&sourceType=1&minChildAge=2&maxResults=10&childAge0=7&discount=0.0&childAge2=-1&childAge3=-1&childAge4=-1&childAge5=-1&childAge6=-1&childAge7=-1&maxChildAge=6&depAirportGroup=-1&dimension5=-1&dimension0=Ski+%26+winter+sports&childAge1=11&dateRange=20091201-20100101&depMonth=12&dimension23=Finland&ERRORDESC=JUD038+Problem+with+party+ages+-++A+passenger+is+not+a+valid+age%2C+passenger+age+is+7+but+should+be+between+2+and+6&durationRange=1-5&sortBy=0%2C1

Or another for 4 nights in Levi but half board and this is £1996.

    http://www.lastminute.com/site/travel/holidays/holiday-availability.html?skin=lmnukgoogle&dim46=2&dimension45=-1&destText=&ERROR=JUD038&maxOffset=0&children=0&adults=2&searchType=basic&dim14=258%2C1-5+nights&depDay=0&expandThreshold=5&productId=634887084&sourceType=1&minChildAge=2&maxResults=10&childAge0=7&discount=0.0&childAge2=-1&childAge3=-1&childAge4=-1&childAge5=-1&childAge6=-1&childAge7=-1&maxChildAge=6&depAirportGroup=-1&dimension5=-1&dimension0=Ski+%26+winter+sports&childAge1=11&dateRange=20091201-20100101&depMonth=12&dimension23=Finland&ERRORDESC=JUD038+Problem+with+party+ages+-++A+passenger+is+not+a+valid+age%2C+passenger+age+is+7+but+should+be+between+2+and+6&durationRange=1-5&sortBy=0%2C1

As poe.tuesday said if you can get half board it will save you a lot when you are there as (I'm sure you're well aware) the euro is so strong at the moment.
