Double bed + mattress

Memory foam is a type of foam which moulds itself to your body shape. Lots of people seem to like it, and it's expensive. I wasn't that sold on the stuff, but it's popular. I suspect that, if the bed is too hard, adding a memory foam topper could leave you lying on firm memory foam (which has shaped itself to your body) on the firm bed. Reflex foam, on the other hand, is normal foam - so if you add soft foam to a hard mattress it should feel softer.

The mattress you had wouldn't have been full memory foam, it would have been reflex foam with a layer of memory foam on top. If it had been all memory foam then you would have sunk most of the depth of the mattress.
Reflex foam is made from loads of bubbles. So when you push down on it, then all the bubbles squash sideways, but they are pushing up trying to regain their original shape. Because of this when you release the pressure it springs straight back to it's original shape........hence the name reflex.
Memory foam is open celled. This means that instead of lots of bubbles it is made up from lots of very small holes (the higher the density the smaller the holes). So when you push down on it the air seeps out of the holes, and you don't have the bubbles pushing back and trying to regain their original shape. So this means that it moulds to your body without causing pressure points. When you release the pressure it leaves an imprint for a couple of seconds.....hence the name memory.0 -
Yes thats right as when the dog had a wee i unzipped it and noticed a huge thick piece (reflex i think) and a couple of inches of softer, must have been the memory bit on top.Tim_Deegan wrote: »The mattress you had wouldn't have been full memory foam, it would have been reflex foam with a layer of memory foam on top. Thanks - I had thought of this one http://www.kdbeds.com/p/Sleepeezee-Concept-1000-Backcare-4ft-6-Double-Mattress.htm Sounds v similar to the Brompton one I tried and liked...but hard to know...
Also some of the Highgate look OK http://www.kdbeds.com/p/Highgrove-Blakes-4ft-6-Double-Mattress.htm Don't know about buying a mattress without trying it first, though - not sure whether I'll like it.0 -
Ended up with the brompton mattress, and one of these beds. Mattress seems fine; finish on the bed isn't the best but - given the price - not sure whether it's worth complaining...
Quick question about the slats on the bed, and protecting the mattress - got the end slats placed right down the top and bottom. The mattress isn't fully on either of the end slats - but should still be supported OK?0 -

You didn't say if it was the Sleepeezee or the Dreamworks Brompton mattress. However they are both pocket sprung, and would therefore need the gaps between the slats reduced to 1", or you would need to lay a sheet of pegboard or hardboard over the slats to spread the weight out.0 -
Sleepeezee - I wanted one I could turn.
Seriously  Would have been nice if the shop had mentioned to me that pocket sprung mattress + slatted bed might be an issue. There's more like 3 inches between slatsHopefully this won't be an issue over a few nights, anyway...

It can actually be a big issue. I'd modify it as soon as possible if I were you.
This is exactly the poor salesmanship that I have mentioned many times previously (and sometimes been slated for). At the end of the day, many sales reps just want a sale, and they don't care about the customer. Otherwise very few shops would actually sell certain brands that have been mentioned previously.0 -
Right - will look to sort something out. I can easily enough stick the mattress on the floor in the meantime, if a solid floor will give it better support (been without a proper bed/mattress for a few weeks now - just the mattress should be an improvement :T)
btw, I asked several stores about this combo (had trouble sorting delivery). None mentioned an issue.0
