Double bed + mattress

I'll need a bed and mattress. Looking for a standard-size (or small) double bed - anything fairly functional and plain is fine, either a wood slatted bed or a divan. I'd need it delivered.

I currently use a pretty firm Silent Night Miracoil mattress, which is fine. Probably want a firm miracoil or pocket sprung mattress - don't have problems sleeping or back pain, doubt it's worth getting a memory foam or especially fancy mattress.

Any good deals on now? Or good shops to look at?

  • Any good deals out there, or have I picked a bad time to buy?

Im surprised you say your happy with a Silent Night miracoil mattess I had one once and it didnt last. And most peoples feedback from these forums are not good for that brand.

I have a pocket sprung mattress at the minute (Harrison) and it has lasted twice as long, I have it at least 8 years, its still fine but i have a sore back these days and my next mattress is definately a memory foam.

I would always recommend trying out mattresses in a shop first and talking with experienced sales people. Your local bed shop (not the big names, that have all year round sales) can give their experience, they know what people have bought and will have got feedback from them. When you try memory foam you might reconsider .....

    What is your budget?

I'd stay away from the brand you have now, as they aren't what they used to be as Greetea says

Thanks for the replies. Will make sure to look at other brands, too, then.

    Budget:
    - Bed, anything that's serviceable and not ugly. Looking online and in Ikea, there seem to be ones from about £150.
    - Mattress, really as cheap as I can get a comfy one, firm that won't be knackered in a year or two. Probably need to go into a shop to look at some, get a sense of how much to expect to pay.
Of course, if it's cheaper to get both at once, that's fine.

Don't know if you have a "Dreams" store nearby?
I just ordered a white wooden slatted bed reduced from £500 to £195 and got a mattress there too. :T

Do check sizes with Ikea as I know their mattress sizes/beds are different to most UK mattress ones!

I did get my bed frame (Roma at £99) from Dreams only as my other had broken and none of the local smaller stores had delivery slots. Im looking for a new double mattress but will be looking to buy from a small family run independent shop or maybe online. I always find these big stores very pushy in their sales techniques!

Im looking at pocket sprung and memory foam options but have yet to find the right one - current basic mattress is uncomfy but will put up with it until I find the right mattress (am one of those folk who spend ages shopping about for something if Its a big spend)

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I don't like shopping, but looks like I will need to go into a bricks and mortar store to try mattresses :(

If you aren't massively bothered what the bed frame looks like I'd explore charity shops that specialise in furniture, Freecycle, Gumtree and eBay. Mattress I'd definitely get new.

I am about to buy a bed and don't understand the reputation silentnight has? I think a local shop will be best as I am too nervous to buy a bed online.

Hope you find a nice one!

    What don't you understand?

I have just asked this question on another thread - has anyone any experience of the Claydon memory foam mattress which is being sold for half price by Homebase at the moment. I have tried to google Claydon and found nothing.
