Thanks for the replies. Will make sure to look at other brands, too, then.

    Budget:
    - Bed, anything that's serviceable and not ugly. Looking online and in Ikea, there seem to be ones from about £150.
    - Mattress, really as cheap as I can get a comfy one, firm that won't be knackered in a year or two. Probably need to go into a shop to look at some, get a sense of how much to expect to pay.
Of course, if it's cheaper to get both at once, that's fine.

You should be able to get a top of the range firm open coil sprung divan set (base and mattress), for well under £300.

As far as Ikea goes, there are some very mixed reviews on MSE, so do a search before you make up your mind.

I have just asked this question on another thread - has anyone any experience of the Claydon memory foam mattress which is being sold for half price by Homebase at the moment. I have tried to google Claydon and found nothing.

It appears to be exclusive to Homebase, and their site says nothing at all about the spec. If I were you I'd go into the store and ask.

Their beds are supposed to be superior. My budget is about £400 max but I just don't trust most beds which seem to be made too cheaply. I also want a long bed this time as i'm quite tall and like to spread out.

I don't know about Silentnight beds but I can tell you that my son and d-i-l had a Silentnight Miracoil mattress and it was utter cr@ p. Barely 12 months old and the sides collapsed completely. They had it on a pine slatted base.

If you do a search on here I think you'll find quite a lot of people have had problems with them.

Neither actually, just trying to add some balance to the other bed sellers who are on here and give feedback on a bed and company I was happy with...

I'm afraid they are far from it. They used to be good quality years ago, but not any more I'm afraid.

Do a search in the MSE threads and you will see that there are loads of complaints about them.

It just shows you the power of advertising when most people thing they are good.

Go into a shop and test out all their mattresses until you find the one that you are most comfortable with. Then find the best price from the online discounters, so that you really p*** off everyone in the trade! :D

Thanks. I was thinking of getting something pocket sprung - the cheap open coil mattresses I've tried haven't been good - though maybe a better open coil mattress would do me better...

Top of the range open coil sprung mattresses are usually very good. If you found a pocket sprung divan set for that price, then it would be very low quality.

Right - that's useful to know. Anyway, if something that price lasts a few years without springs etc poking out, I'd be happy...

Is a divan likely to be a better bet than a slatted bed?
