Just incase it hasn't been mentioned, the vehicle you wish to drive as a third party has to have it's own insurance.

IE if i drive your car, you have to have insurance and i have to have the 3rd party cover, if the seller had cancelled their policy, then the car would have no insurance, regardless of your own policy

This is an urban myth, very very few policies stipulate the car you are driving under the driving other cars extension has to have its own insurance.

However the problem with driving a car that does not have its own insurance under your driving other cars extension is it will not show as being by the ANPR cameras so is there is a fair chance the police will pull you over if you pass one of their camera cars. It is also debatable whether once you park the car up that it is insured eg if the hand brake then failed and it rolled down a hill and hit another car/ person

Really? It's been the case with every insurance policy I have had.

I very much doubt it, have a read of your policy booklet in the section marked along the lines of "Liability to others". There will be a section about driving other cars and the restrictions. I would be surprised if yours stipulates the other car has to be insured as only a handful of companies include this.

If you let me know who your Insured with I'll find the relevant part for you

No, your wrong there. The driver only needs to be covered for 3rd party risks, so using your own insurance is fine.

How would the motor trade ever be covered?

I also was under the impression that to drive another car under your fully comp policy, that car had to be insured directly, by someone else.

No only a very small amount of Insurers stipulate the other vehicle must be insured

If thats the case then surely it causes loads of vehicles to show up on the police computer things and need pulling over for being uninsured, essentially wasting police time

I'm not sure its that many (Maybe one of the police officer posters could enlighten us) but it is one of the draw backs of the car you are driving under the DOCs extension not being insured.
  • You just need to ensure your vehicle is on the database and remember your reg number.

The car DOES NOT have to be insured in it's own right, this is another myth. The reason companies may not allow you to drive un-insured cars is that the moment you step out of the vehicle, the car is un-insured and on a public highway which can lead to points for the owner of the said vehicle

i've just found this, so i stand corrected.

But i suggest everyone reads their policy documents carefully, every insurance policy i've had has stipulated that the vehicle i'm driving has to have it's own insurance, therefore my comments were based on my own experiences
