Royal Mail / Postman: Enough is Enough!

As a Postie, can I add that its really annoying to have a parcel/recorded delivery item and having people not answering the door when you know they are in,it means a trip to the nearest post office at the end of the shift.
However the Postman can ring your bell/knock (not the window!)the door to deliver your item,he is allocated 90 seconds at the door to do this.He is not allowed to do this with other peoples mail as mail should only be delivered to the address on item.(however most postmen is aware of customers who will help take items in).
In a block of flats, you should only alert customers who you have mail for that you need into the close to deliver the items.(ie if you have mail for everyone except the ground floor, you cannot knock or ring their bell to deliver other peoples items)
If I was your postie you would have 90 seconds to get to the door to let me in, if you never the mail would be marked "security door entry" and an attempt would be made next day,RM says that after the 3rd day the mail is to be returned to sender however I have never done that (yet)
My advice would be to put in writing that you do not wish to receive undeliverable items for anyone else in the close however if it is your own item you want a card thro the door to collect it at delivery office/post office if you are not in.
PS How much a Xmas tip does he get ?I have a deep burning indifference0 -

also, royal mail staff get paid, why should we be leaving any tips for any service that we pay for already. We are not america where everyone has to be bribed to do their job properly.
why should the thread starter have to tip the postie in her area. What a thing to post!0 -

It is ludicrous to beleive a postman would instill a harrasment campaign against someone who is ill, especially when he has been warned already.I mean, who is he? that Postman out of the viz comic?
no, OP, please give us the rest of the story - do you personally know this person? Have you upset him in the past?
Why on earth aren't you just going to collect your post from the post office if getting it delivered is such an issue for you?
the postman would love that! after all, your not even bothering to go and get your mail when he spends 5 minutes attempting to deliver it anyway!!!! postmen do NOT hang around.
unless of course there is another reason........................ I await the full story.
I find it absolutely incredible that people can try to turn this around to put the blame on the OP!!! It isn't ludicrous to believe the Postman is harrassing the OP - sh'e clearly had a bellyful of a stupid postman who clearly doesn't know how to do his job. He IS 'hanging around' as you put it - he's banging about for 5 minutes at a time . No need for it at all - and why should the OP have to get ALL her mail from the sorting office? The postman should be delivering letters etc, ringing (no more than twice) for larger packets and then leaving a card. And, if the OP has said she doesn't want to be disturbed for other peoples mail, then he shouldn't be still doing it.
He wants a kick up the a*** from his supervisor.ELITE 5:2

I agree. I can't believe that anyone could think that this postman's behaviour is appropriate- it is not. Who would want someone banging on their windows?! He's paid to deliver post, and if the person can't open their door for whatever reason to receive a parcel he should put a card through the door. Shocking.
Hope you get it sorted x"I don't want to make money, I just want to be wonderful."

So someone could be in the bath,in the shower, could be cooking a meal, could have just sat down to a hot lunch, could be ill, could be working from home on something important, could getting ready to go out, could be having a domestic crisis, could be in the middle of an important phone call... etc etc but according to you because they are "in" they should drop everything and answer the door to you?
Great! Then when they get there they find out that it is actually a parcel for someone else!!!
No thanks.0 -
There are a few threads a the moment where posters are claiming OPs haven't told them the full facts. I don't know how they know that.
To be honest I'd be wary of posting anything which might make me identifiable to someone I was complaining about. :rolleyes:0 -
For the OP- I fully sympathise, my doorbell was nearest the door so when the postman had something for someone that wasn't in, they always used to ring my doorbell first, then I'd hear him ring everyone else's. I went out to tell them I would not sign for anyone else's mail and to stop doing it but it never stopped, so the only solution was to stop answering the door.
I realise this isn't working in your situation but I just wanted to say I hope your complaint is treated seriously and it stops this behaviour because it is extremely frustrating.0 -

Sure enough he should be putting it in there instead of bothering the OP, If it is a parcel and he can't get an answer he should leave a card and the person reciving the parcel can go and collect it at their convinence. What he is doing is out of order and he should be reprimanded.

Nope.
Apartments/flats in this country are a mixture.
They can have outside postboxes where you need a key to access your particular mail box. (Prone to theft and lost key problems.)
They can have the same postboxes placed inside an entrance hall where the postman needs to buzz to get in for added security.
They can have individual front doors each with their own letter box.
And sometimes they can just have one letterbox where all the mail goes through for the entire building on the front door. (More common in converted houses.)I'm not cynical I'm realistic

as a customer, can I add it's very annoying (and certainly not on) to pay for a service that does not exist, ie; the postie actually ringing one's doorbell and not just posting a pre-written out 'whilst you were out' card. We know that trick.
also, royal mail staff get paid, why should we be leaving any tips for any service that we pay for already. We are not america where everyone has to be bribed to do their job properly.

Postman are big on sarcasm as well
If you can prove your Postman does that "trick" and he is caught doing it he will be sacked for "willful delay of the mail".I have a deep burning indifference0 -

No thanks.
In those types of events usually people shout from a window telling you to leave it and they will get it at their leisure, the 90 seconds is the amount of time Royal Mail tell you to wait.
And no as I stated before you do NOT deliver mail to other addresses(unless there is an understanding between the neighbours)I have a deep burning indifference0
