There is no such thing as road tax.

People refer to it as road tax. It's Vehicle Excise Duty, or in simple terms, vehicle tax. Road tax was eliminated ages ago.

Try and find a reference to road tax. It was changed from Road Tax to Vehicle Tax because it no longer paid for roads. It only paid for expansions to roads, or one off stuff, like new roads, bridges etc. It may pay for motorways, but I can't remmeber off the top of my head. It's more a general taxation, hence being able to charge different charges for different classes of vehicles.

The councils are, I believe, responsible for the existing roads in their local areas, which is paid for via council tax.

he's trying to be clever because it is actually vehicle licensing. If its not a road tax, then its probably just another idiotic lefty nonsense. they set up the DVLA to run the licensing and all the licensing funds raised are used to pay for the DVLA - another monumental waste of taxpayers money.

So you reckon that running the DVLA costs as much as they raise in Road tax/VED (and stuff like personalised number plates)

OMG they changed the name and Graham still argues the point.

So it was called road tax then Graham?

And it is illegal to park a car or to use a road without it, and it also funds some of the roads?

I am glad you left for so long Lazarus.

I'm not arguing a point. They changed the name because road tax paid for the roads in their entirity.

    Road tax no longer exists.

It is now called VED, or vehicle tax for ease, which pays for a lot more than just roads.

They would never have been able to apply different bandings to road tax, and allow some people to go around tax free if it paid for roads only. But it does not pay for all roads anymore. The councils pay for their roads in their boroughs.

I'm not arguing anything. I just don't see the point in false information.

    It is not false information.

    a) It was called road tax and most people over the age of 30 know it as that.
    b) you can not use the UK roads with a car without it (how is that not a tax for using the roads.?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????)

It is now called VED but it is still a tax to use the roads with your car. Otherwise you cannot drive or park you car on a road legally in the UK.

It is not now called "road tax" but it is a tax for using the roads.

I don't know why you are so petty, it was and still is a tax for using the roads. Even you can not deny that.

Test type in VED on google and see how it is described Graham. (HINT ROAD TAX just in case you can't be bothered even) Type in road tax and you get the government VED page !!!!!! (if you type in VED you don't)

You are taking this out of all proportion.

White horse said the councils don't deal with the roads. I said they still pay for them even if they are contracted out. White horse said "what about road tax". I said there is no such thing. Vehicle tax does NOT pay for the roads. It pays for some that fall outside the remit of councils, and this is all this is about.

Your council tax pays for the rest of the roads.

You are banging on at me about this, and you have lost perspective of what the point actually was, in regards to what actually pays for what.

Whether you can park on a road is neither here nor there in this context.

I'm not here to argue with you. The point is, road tax does not exist, and vehicle tax does not pay for the roads, council tax does. So that bit of paper in your car window is not paying for the tarmac you drive on. Your council tax you pay is.

It is NOT a tax for using the roads....as some cars do not pay this at all and still get to use the roads. It's a tax to use your vehicle. Nothing more, nothing less.

No they have green concessions and vintage. If they are paying nothing how is it a tax to use you vehicle (your logic)?

Don't forget the highways agency (which most probably out strips any council repairs) budget.

It is a tax for using the the road if you think not you are being foolish, every website disagrees with you!!

Every vehicle registered in the United Kingdom (UK) must be taxed if used or kept on a public road. If the vehicle is kept off-road it must either be taxed or have a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) in force. If not it could be wheel clamped or removed.

Alright really. The point was, that piece of paper, doesn't pay for the roads. Simple. I'm not going to go on and on with this one.

Therefore, to hopefully draw a line, you are right.
