I had a long post typed out and it hasn't posted.

I'm sorrry that this thread has started to degenerate and there are some really some spiteful nasty posts.

I can see both sides, the non smokers and the smokers area always going to disagree.

Until such times as the owners of the pubs/restraunts/shops, move the ashtrays that they have placed beside doorways then there is no way smokers are going to move. That is where they have been told to smoke and that is where they will continue to smoke.

I know, from reading these posts, that the traffic argument is not holding water with the non smokers, but here in Scotland there are adverts on the TV showing children with masks standing next to the pavement with a car exhaust asking for people to inform on drivers who are sitting with their car engines running. There are no adverts asking for people to inform on people who are smoking outside. Infact car exhausts are more harmful to children outside than smokers are. Children are at a level of the car exhaust and in most cases if smokers are standing outside, then unless they are crouching down, its hardly likely that smokers are blowing smoke in their faces.

put a person in a car and fill it with secondhand smoke and they MAY become long term ill,put the same person in a car and fill with exhaust fumes and they WILL die

sorry but the abuse started at the very first few posts, and you have been one of the biggest contributors to it

I haven't intentionally made any abusive posts. I have been very honest, though. I'm an sincerely sorry if I have been abusive. I am not sorry for my oppinions.

Can you point out where I've been abusive, exactly?

  • I AM ALSO PERMANENTLY IN AN ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR

I don't seem to have a problem, I get around fine in towns or city street, most have dropped pavements. I have also offroaded, may I suggest that you get a better wheelchair?

Oh, and I am also a smoker!

Sorry, I cant afford an electric wheelchair, and as im 23 I have to try and keep some sort of physical health considering I cant walk more than a few steps - still doesnt mean I can bound over grass in an NHS wheelchair, and the whole kirb isnt lowered - only at corners so what u on about? U expect me to be able to bound down kirbs???
At the end of the day, ive to go out and spend money on an electric wheelchair to I can 'run' away from smokers? !!!! off! its my right to be in public and enjoy it as much as any smoker - tell me im wrong? Me being there doesnt upset or offend anyone, so why should smokers do that to me???

Smokers want everyone else to bend round backwards for there discgusting habit - aint gonna happen....

So you enjoy making people around you smell as bad as you do whilst increasing their risk of cancer. Hysterical.

Their clothes stink there hair stinks and overall it is very unpleasant. It gets so bad that I can come home from work and I smell of smoke. I think it is disgusting that we have to put up with this, can these people not actually smell themselves, god knows what their breath smells like.

Do smokers have idea idea how bad they smell?

I dont agree with you here the smokers in my work smoke outside away from everyone yet when they come back into the office they bring the vile smell in with them why should we have to put up with that ? I am sure the smokers would have something to say if i sat next to one of them breaking wind all day !

I'm not trying to convert the whole world! If people like stinking thats up to them! I just don't like having to sit and smell second hand smoke all day!

I am quite sure that smokers do not realise how bad they smell. When I smoked I used to be fanatical about using mouthwash, chewing gum afterwards, sucking mints etc. That was just for the breath!;)

Smokers don't realise just how much it seeps into everything in their home. Furniture, curtains & carpets, clothes, even luggage & bags. I used to help in a charity shop and as you emptied a bag of donations you could always tell if it came from a smoking household. Even if it was top quality stuff, it stank.

Too bl00dy right! My boss smokes and she stinks all the time

Smoking is a filthy disgusting habit

he subjected me to his vile stench

Maybe my dog doesn't notice it but I do and I dont want my dog having to breath in his vile stench of smoke !!

If smokers smoked in an outhouse or garden shed then they could breathe in their own !!!!!! and we wouldnt have to suffer it. As it would be fully enclosed.

It makes one's nails and teeth turn yellow and above all people who do smoke stink to high heaven... the smell just lingers on everything they must be so used to because like non smokers they don't feel ill but we do.

No we don't. It's almost impossible to enter any of those places without walking through a thick cloud of smoke from the b@st@ards gathering around the door

My daughter's friend is the same. Her family are chain smokers and the girl absolutely reeks. I dread to think what the inside of her lungs is like. She gets sprayed with cheap perfume on her way out to school to try to mask the smell but it only makes it worse. She literally smells our house out if she's playing with my daughter so we try to make excuses why she can't come over.

It's such a shame that her family care more about their right to smoke than they do their daughter, because that's what it comes down to in the end. This kid has breathed foul air since birth and she is becoming more and more isolated because the other kids don't play with her due to the smell........yet the cig craving overrides that. It's a crying shame really

and I am still only on page 14

As posted earlier, Enviromental pollution (including cars) only contribute to 3% of all cancer cases. 60% is lifestyle choices which includes smoking, drinking, unhealthy eating, and little exercise.....out of all of them, only one puts other people at risk of cancer, the rest just hards the users.

Adverts about smoking are carefuly chosen, because smokers complain - so they are rarely shown, and they have to be very careful about the adverts because of the backlash.

Have a look at cotdeath statistics, and how many of the babies are from smoking families - why is no-one being truthful and telling them there smoking could have contributed to there babies dying??? because they will get sued....people need honesty.

Unless people start feeling guilty for there actions, innocent babies will die. Anyone who says they smoked suring pregnancy and didnt feel guilty doing so needs assessing. I know plenty of pregnant woman who are smoking and desperatly trying to quit cos they feel so guilty of the damage there doing to there baby, so why do some people just not care?!?!

AGAIN, ill preach to you all.....Public spaces are for everyones enjoyment, if I want to do something that will offend others in a public space, im not allowed - SO SOMEONE ANSWER TO ME, WHY IS IT FAIR FOR SMOKERS TO OFFEND ME AND STOP ME ENJOYING A PUBLIC SPACE???? no one has answered that so far

I find this part absolutely disgusting(in red) and with no scientific backup, shame on you for trying the guilt trip on smokers,
I seriously hope that anyone that has suffered aa cot death does not read this, you should be thoruoghly ashamed of yourself,
I have reported this post of yours as abusive

You mean like outside hospitals, that no-one pays attention to? or outside schools? that no-one pays attention to.....what difference would it really make?? majority of smokers DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE ELSE. fact.
    Your statement is so wrong....FACT!

A lot of people I know who smoke, dont do it in front of their children, because they care, a lot of smokers respect that some of their freinds (like myself) DONT smoke, so disappear to smoke a cigarette (even if we are outside), indeed I know smokers who will not smoke in their OWN house whilst I am visiting out of sheer respect for me as a NON smoker.

In effect, a lot of smokers CARE about the fact that not everyone does smoke. I wish it could be said the other way around, but its posts like yours that make me realise a lot of non smokers DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE ELSE. fact!

Smoking is banned from enclosed areas for a reason,

I don't know where this only 3% is car pollution popped up, but it seems the maths are flawed MAJORLY
An analysis of air pollution in central Copenhagen, Denmark10 concluded that traffic sources contributed 90 percent of the organic hydrocarbon (such as benzene-related compounds) levels on working days and 60 percent during weekends. The study used several different approaches to assessing the health impacts of these exposures, and concluded that the direct effect of exposure to these organic compounds and other mutagens in the urban air was a maximum of five lung cancer cases each year per one million persons.
An early study of the link between traffic-related air pollution and cancer was conducted in Hamburg, Germany11. Cancer frequency for almost 62,000 people living in street with high levels of traffic (>30,000 cars/day) were related to about 12,000 cancer cases for the period 1970 – 72. The study found an excess risk of 6 percent for all cancers, with a 12 percent overall excess cancer risk for men. More importantly, the study, which controlled for smoking, found an excess risk for lung cancer of 34 percent. Somewhat surprisingly, the study also found an excess risk for colon cancer of 68 percent.

There's thousands more links I could find for you to compare with "car pollution can kill", just as many links as "smoking can kill" or "passive smoking can kill"

I have already previously included links for comparisons, but to be fair this link includes ALL pollutants.

I think someone smoking on the street can do me no worse than someone driving on the street, I could include plenty more links to compare them for you, but it seems the Anti smokers are too blinkered to accept them anyway, choosing as it were to say "save it for another thread".

The topic of this thread is about having the right to sue a smoker on the street for passive pollution, so in comparison, if it were the case, it is reasonable for me to have the right to sue a driver for passive pollution on the same street.

As for smoking outside a school, just how hypocritical is it for someone to moan to a smoker outside a school, whilst pulling up in their 4x4 when its only a 5 minute walk from their home, to pick their child up?

Of course we should ignore this factor because "well erm....that's different, its a necessary evil, I NEED my car".

Passive smoking is no worse outdoors than passive vehicle pollution, we could go round in circles arguing it, I have shown just a few statistic links, yet I have not seen any link or statistic either on this thread, or online that states statistically or categorically that "passive smoking is worse than vehicle pollution", all I have heard is personal opinions.

Until such a pie chart or statistic can prove to me that vehicle pollution is safer than a passive smoker in the street, I am no position to complain to a smoker for smoking in the street, neither is anyone else for the same principle.

Its boils down to personal choice and the ability to learn how to live and let live.
