Oh and...
Smoking and cancer
Thanks to years of research, the links between smoking and cancer are now very clear. Smoking is the single biggest cause of cancer in the world, and accounts for one in four UK cancer deaths.
In the UK, smoking kills five times more people than road accidents, overdoses, murder, suicide and HIV all put together.
http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/healthyliving/smokingandtobacco/Yes im disabled....yes I can do things you cant....but you can do things I cant so were equal!0 -
And....as for everyone who said that car pollution is more dangerous than cigarettes - this is untrue...
Lifestyle factors are the biggest cause of cancer
Several organizations colluded to determine cancer risks. They found that lifestyle choices account for up to 60% of cancers whereas environmental factors accounted foronly about 3%. Lifestyle choices include smoking, poor diet and lack of physical exercise.

^^ I mean it does me or my family no harm if you dont eat well or exercise enough, but if you are smoking in a public space, where I have to go - then this isnt just killing you, but causing me actual harm as proved that NO level of passive smoking is safe.Yes im disabled....yes I can do things you cant....but you can do things I cant so were equal!0 -
No dear I didnt force you to smoke outside. Research was done to prove that smoking in enclosed spaces is very dangerous, and not exactly fair to be allowed in public places WHERE EVERYONE IS ALLOWED TO ENJOY THE SPACE
Dont have a go at me, give up smoking if ur so !!!!ed about smoking in the rain. Did you ever consider that maybe decent smoking parents were sick of there kids having to be in smokey enviroments when they dont smoke around them? Not everyone wants there kids in early graves or with several medical problems you know!
The thing is, if smokers had consideration n didnt smoke right at a doorway or make it impossible for someone with a baby or pregnant etc to walk anywhere without being forced to walk through clouds of smoke - then we wouldnt be whinging so much
I ACTUALLY DONT CARE if there is extensive research into just how dangerous breathing in smoke from the streets is, because being pregnant after losing 8 babies, im not prepared to take ANY risks. I wouldnt put up with a stinking person standing next to me and I dont put up with stinking smokers either - because the smell makes me wanna gag. And to make it worse, majority of people dont smell like they havnt washed - but theres a !!!! load more smokers...making it more of an issue
I cant stand the smell of fags and its not like I only face it once or twice a week. Anywhere outside u walk in the town or city the streets are littered with smokers, most gather together and create large clouds of smoke - which almost makes me gag with how strong it is, and worries me that my poor baby is breathing this is
I now drive places rather than walk, because me, my daughter and my unborn baby are more protected in my car and dont have to stand in clouds of smoke and this in turn means im polluting the earth more!!!
I also hate how smokers just chuck there fags everywhere, and the streets are littered with it. I read a post on a baby forum of a woman who took her daughter to the park and turned away for a second to turn back and find her daughter with a fag doubt in her mouth, she was rushed to hospital. Even the park isnt safe anymore!!!
Cigarettes to children can be FATAL. This in turn means your just as inconsiderate and ruthless as junkies leaving dirty needles. About time you all got a grip (intended for the dirty littering smokers!) and put your used fags in the bin, even junkies are using disposible bins now......
ALL I ASK is that smokers have consideration for other people. You may not smell the smoke, but non-smokers can. You make think blowing the other way makes it fine, but in reality if we can smell it, its in our lungs...and the more times this happens, the more damage that can be caused.
Here is some FACTS and RESEARCH for you smokers needing proof:
What is a safe level of secondhand smoke?
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Studies have shown that even low levels of secondhand smoke exposure can be harmful. The only way to fully protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke exposure is to completely eliminate smoking in public spaces. Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot completely eliminate secondhand smoke exposure
Does secondhand smoke contain harmful chemicals?
Yes. Of the more than 4,000 chemicals that have been identified in secondhand tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, and 50 of these are known to cause cancer. These chemicals include (1):- arsenic (a heavy metal toxin)
- benzene (a chemical found in gasoline)
- beryllium (a toxic metal)
- cadmium (a metal used in batteries)
- chromium (a metallic element)
- ethylene oxide (a chemical used to sterilize medical devices)
- nickel (a metallic element)
- polonium–210 (a chemical element that gives off radiation)
- vinyl chloride (a toxic substance used in plastics manufacture)
^^^^ and you think im ott for not wanting my Daughter and unborn baby to breath in all that??? get a grip, I want the best for my kids - and being near cancer sticks aint !!!!in one of them
Signing a petition I found to ban smoking on public streets as we speak, if smokers cant be considerate - then its the only way to go...
OK to all the bits I've highlighted and underlined...."smokers".....can we please stop with the huge generalisations, I'm getting offended at how my continual posts on this are ignored. SOME PEOPLE WHO SMOKE may be inconsiderate, some may throw butts on the floor, some may stand in doorways, bus shelters etc etc but not all. Some non smokers are a right pain in the butt but I don't generalise like you do so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Now....bits in bold and starting from the top....
~ research has shown smoking in enclosed spaces is harmful, thats why nobody is allowed to smoke in public enclosed spaces. No research has shown that walking past a lit cigarette, for a moment, in the open air is harmful.
~ nobody is having a go at you because smokers have to stand outside in rain, hail or snow because that is the choice we make. SOME non-smokers seem to have a problem with this though...hence this entire thread.
~ "clouds of smoke" I've highlighted a few times because in all honesty I've never walked through town and seen "clouds of smoke" hovering above someone smoking a cigarette. Maybe my City doesn't have the same sort of smoking parties as yours does but if you could photograph one of these "clouds of smoke" I'd be keen to see it.
~ You wouldn't put up with a stinking person standing next to you....so what would you do? Tell them they stink and to move away from you before you vomit on them? Give them a lecture on their personal hygiene habits? Or move away so you couldn't smell them anymore?
~ You don't just face these "clouds of smoke" once or twice a week? But I thought you moved to the countryside where pollution was at a minimum which meant even one smoker stuck out?
~ The generalisation (again) of all smokers being as ruthless and inconsiderate as junkies.....well do I really have to explain why I underlined this?? OK I will,
1) huge generalisation of all smokers (again)
2) needles carry blood which is what will transmit infection, fag butts don't
3) a very small amount of heroin would kill a child, touching a fag butt may well be disgusting but it's rarely going to kill them on the spot.
4) 'Junkies' inject ILLEGAL drugs, smoking is LEGAL and PERMITTED in most open spaces.
Just as an extra, I'd be concerned about your stress levels over this and perhaps you should relax just a little.0 -
~ research has shown smoking in enclosed spaces is harmful, thats why nobody is allowed to smoke in public enclosed spaces. No research has shown that walking past a lit cigarette, for a moment, in the open air is harmful.
you obviously didnt read my post, research shows NO LEVEL OF SECOND HAND SMOKE IS SAFE. EVEN LOW LEVELS CAN CAUSE HARM.
~ nobody is having a go at you because smokers have to stand outside in rain, hail or snow because that is the choice we make. SOME non-smokers seem to have a problem with this though...hence this entire thread.
Read who I was quoting, he said that I personally had made him smoke outside...
I didnt say one person smoking, generally outside hospitals, pubs etc there is a group of people surrounding the entrances, ofcourse there is a cloud of smoke above them because there are several people puffing away. Not only are they smoking around the entrance, but also the smoke is entering the building - hopefully the new law in Scotland will prevent people smoking so close to entrances, after all you cant even leave the maternity unit with your newborn without there first breath of fresh air being fag smoke....
~ You wouldn't put up with a stinking person standing next to you....so what would you do? Tell them they stink and to move away from you before you vomit on them? Give them a lecture on their personal hygiene habits? Or move away so you couldn't smell them anymore?
Yes I would tell them to !!!!in move or have a bath, its offensive! ive seen someone arrested before for upsetting the public because they smelt so bad...I wouldnt let them just stand right next to me, id tell them to go wash or go stand next the the smokers, should mask the smell a bit lol
~ You don't just face these "clouds of smoke" once or twice a week? But I thought you moved to the countryside where pollution was at a minimum which meant even one smoker stuck out?
I dont understand what u mean about this?
~ The generalisation (again) of all smokers being as ruthless and inconsiderate as junkies.....well do I really have to explain why I underlined this?? OK I will,
1) huge generalisation of all smokers (again)
2) needles carry blood which is what will transmit infection, fag butts don't
wrong. saliva held on used butts can carry infection
3) a very small amount of heroin would kill a child, touching a fag butt may well be disgusting but it's rarely going to kill them on the spot.
wrong. Nicotine is highly dangerous for children and even a small amount of consumption can be fatal
"Cigarette Butts contain enough nicotine to kill your child"
http://www.marshallbrain.com/cp/cigarette-butts.htm
4) 'Junkies' inject ILLEGAL drugs, smoking is LEGAL and PERMITTED in most open spaces.
^^ Doesnt mean you are doing any less harm. Not all Junkies have diseases that could kill, neither does all smokers BUT NICOTINE CAN KILL A CHILD.
Just as an extra, I'd be concerned about your stress levels over this and perhaps you should relax just a little
I am more than relaxed, im sat on the sofa with my feet up - debates are good, if your open minded enough to accept facts
See my replies in blue.....Yes im disabled....yes I can do things you cant....but you can do things I cant so were equal!0 -
One of the things that annoy me about smokers is that they smoke for their own good and not give a crap about anyone else - includes there families.
Now you should do what is good for you, but poisoning your spouse, children, grandson just for there pleasure seems to stupid to me.0 -
momyama wrote:Off topic, but just as a matter of nettiquette, can we sort out our quoting, please?beccam wrote:Not sure what you're getting at...could you explain?
You’re selecting to quote me, then replying with your text in the quotation box. It’s harder to read, difficult to see who’s said what and can make it look like someone’s saying something that they aren’t.
momyama wrote:Go back and read it again
beccam wrote:I've read it twice and still don't get what you're sarcastic eyes are about
Well, IIRC, I said that since “smoking harms you and others around you”, then me walking through the cloud of smoke or taking a lungful whilst walking into a shop is harming me. You didn’t seem to acknowledge this point, more downplay it. I should also add that it’s not just inhalation that’s an issue. Several people on here have discussed sore eyes as a result of smoke in their faces.
momyama wrote:Absolutely, but again that's neither here nor there. Petrol prices are too high and Sophie won Big Brother. They're different discussions.
beccam wrote:so in the same respect don't let others use the argument that all smokers are inconsiderate and rude....it's a seperate issue if following your logic. (and you actually watch BB???)
No, no, no. I’m saying that in my experience, the vast majority of smokers are inconsiderate, selfish and ignorant. There is a tendency to agree with this by other non-smokers. You’re saying that non-smokers can be rude. I don’t disagree at all, but that’s a whole separate issue.
beccam wrote:again....show me prove that someone smelling of smoke is causing you real harm, just as I can't prove the smell of curry is not harming that patient neither can you prove someone smelling of smoke will.
I never said that someone smelling of smoke is causing me harm. Someone else may have, I can’t remember. Slightly OT, you would expect me to shower before going on duty, yes? Just as a matter of basic courtesy. I agree that I reeked of BO, my patients wouldn’t be too happy. But smoking staff still come onto the ward stinking. Regards curry, I suppose that would depend on if you found it an unpleasant smell, I suppose. I personally can’t imagine that anyone would. I think the main difference is intent or consideration. I shower because I think of the people I’m nursing, I may eat curry because I need to eat lunch and that’s what I enjoy and no-one’s ever taken issue with it being a nasty smell. Smokers smoke outside work knowing full well that it’s going to make them stink.
beccam wrote:it goes further to prove my point that being rude etc is not something exclusive to smokers as some on this thread would like to believe.
I don’t think anyone’s ever said that rudeness was exclusive to smokers. Just because something else is wrong, that doesn’t make smoking “right”.
beccam wrote:But it is acceptable for assumptions and conclusions to be drawn about smokers on the basis of one or two personal experiences?
It’s not, it’s thirty years worth of experience including hundreds of pub’ / nightclub / town centre visits. A notable exception is Cardiff. There certainly is smoke, but there seems to be a whole lot less of it. Different mentality, I wonder?
beccam wrote:because they have had a bad experience with one or two smokers then all of them must be the same.
It’s not “one or two” though, it’s many.0 -

.....but lets not discuss the relevance
Again, just because other things are wrong, that doesn't make smoking right.
The whole alcohol thing, I question. And even it it were true. Let's say hypothetically that every drink of alcohol will contribute toward you having cancer, then who am I (as a hypothetical drinker) affecting - me! Who are all the smokers affecting - everyone around them.
Hence the answer to the title of this thread. YES, I agree.0 -
I cant quote ur post for some weird reason :S but in reply to your traffic etc, I live in the countryside and only visit the town when I have to.....so ontop of the stupid amount of cars on the road (which im not happy about, and thats another issue!) but my family is breathing in smoke too......
also I dont drink, neither does my partnerI have very personal reasons why, i do think that drink should not be advertised, or take place of a whole aisle at the entrance to tescos!!!! Because, it is by far just as dangerous as cigarettes, if not worse. And its addiction can kill you a lot quicker than smoking, as my brother died at 35 for this reason
thanks for the links, interesting and useful!
Wow, party at your house be a bundle of laughs then!!! :rolleyes:0
