I've frozen cakes in the past with icing and have had no ill effect - I just took the required slices out and left it on a sideboard/in the fridge to defrost at room tempreture.0

I've had a quick search and can't find anything, so hopefully I'm not duplicating another post.
I'm due to have my first baby in the next few weeks and, once I start maternity leave, would like to bake some cakes that I can put in the freezer and then just get out the day before or the morning before people arrive.
Are there any particular cakes (or other sweet treats) that are especially good for freezing? I know muffins freeze pretty well, so will do some of those, but I was also hoping to do some loaf-type cakes too that can be sliced.
Thank you0 -
Loaf types should be fine for freezing. You could even pre-slice them and freeze with something between the slices (I have used cut up plastic bags for want of anything else).0

If you can get hold of Fay Ripley's Family Food receipe book she indicates which ones can be frozen (ISBN: 9780718154608)
E.g.:
Lemon drizzle cake (add icing after defrosting)
Shortbread biscuits
Raspberry cakes (sponge cakes with raspberry fillings)
Chocolate Torte

Hello - congratulations on the new baby
I would say that loaf type cakes usually work well - not sure about frosting. So i would go for victoria sandwich type cakes which you can defrost and then add frosting or jam etc. Chocolate, lemon, fruit and especially banana loaf works really well this way.
Just dont ice them or add frosting before you freeze.

At work we bulk-order cakes from the WI and freeze them so we always have a supply in for tea breaks - I've never found one that doesn't freeze well. They send us a variety including lemon drizzle cake, jam sandwich, sponge sandwich with buttercream, fruit loaf, chocolate cake...anything really. have fun!August grocery challenge: £50

Thank you everyone for your replies, they've all been really useful.
I finish work on Friday which is two weeks before the baby is due, so hopefully she or he will stay where they are until I've had a chance to do some baking!!
Thank you again

i had 2 blocks of butter to use up so I did the following Mary Berry recipe:
Apricot Swiss Cakes:
butter
icing sugar
self raising flour
cornflour
To finish:
Topped with jam of your choice so I'm using leftover strawberry jam and leftover blackcurrant jam
Will they freeze ok?
I hope so because I made about 50! They'd be ideal for OH lunchbox
