Can you freeze buns and cakes?

Well, Ive made my sons b.day party cake (victoria sponge) and from what ive tasted, that I had to cut off as it had over spilt  it tastes great. :j

Now the next step is to ice it. Ive got some fondant icing and some black food colouring..if I add a tiny tiny tiny amount of the black..it'll colour the icing grey won't it?? (I want to make a road)

What I want to know is can I/should I freeze the cake? The party isn't untill Next Sunday (13th). And if I can freeze it,should I freeze it bare,or ready iced and decorated? Sorry if I sound thick :o

freezing cake isn't a problem - just make sure that you wrap it well. I use foil and then clingfilm on top of that :D

I have never frozen an iced cake before and sure that it would be fine, but if it were me I would ice it when youtake it out of the freezer.

Good luck and I'm sure that you'll son will love it!

  • I have frozen a shop bought iced cake before and it was fine. I am sure that a home made one would be fine.

So if I ice it with rolled out fondant icing then wrap it with tinfoil and then clingfilm (why is that required,is it to stop condensation or something? ) and then freeze it it will be fine? How long to defrost?

Im asking cos it will be my first go at cake decorating (gulp!) so don't wanna leave it till the last min to do before next weekends party incase I mess it up and have to sort something else quick! Thought if I have a go with the icing tommorow when the cake has gone cold, but it won't go how I want it to, I will have enough time to have another go. But if it goes ok and I'm happy with it..thats why was wondering if could freeze it,cos I just know I wouldn't be able to do it as good twice in a row iyswim?

i only double wrap it to make sure that the freezer doesn't dry it out - not sure if it works scientifically but makes me feel better about it!!!

I am sure that fondant icing would be fine - any extra decoration like figures etc can be added later - icing keeps weel in the fridge too. I would take the cake out of the freezer the night before or first thing in the morning for an late afternoon party.

    hth

we'll want to see pictures of course :D

Would you have to unwrap it before it thawed in case the icing stuck to the wrapping?
    Don't know,just a thought.

And we all know what thought did.

  • Hi all, quick question.

I am making a jam sponge with buttercream icing covered on icing.

Can I cut it into slices and freeze them individually?

    hiya Ging

clarify please - are you just using buttercream...or are you using icing (water+icing sugar) on top?

If it's cake/jam and buttercream it will freeze fine...whole or presliced (in fact that's a really good idea actually..)
I have a feeling though that 'icing' won't freeze well - but someone else will be along shortly and help...

    Icing on the top

    Thanks.
  • we have a cake freezer at work where we freeze any and every kind of cake...i have not personally noticed any detrimental effects to either type of icing :) i would wrap it well though, possibly in foil, to keep it in good condition.

    hope this helps
