Nationwide treated me like dirt for trying to pay money IN to my account

A bank doesn't change it's T&C's for the fun of it - there must have been a valid reason as to why they couldn't get what they wanted.

completely agree, and I don't have an issue when those changes to the terms and conditions are fair - these changes weren't. I'd been quite happy using a basic account with them for nearly 5 years, never applied for an upgrade once because quite simply i didn't want one. the valid reason you speak of was probably because when my application did get declined was most likely my history, not so great, but that wasnt the reason as to why i applied for the upgrade in the first place. it was to get me access to my money that shouldn't be restricted in the first place, just because i had a basic account.

i applied for the upgrade because i felt i (and other basic bank account holders at nationwide) were being, for want of a better word, discriminated against, simply because i had a basic bank account and not a full one.

the issue with their T & C was that basic bank account holders at NW were NOT allowed to take less than £30 quid out over the counter (on regular occasions I would have to take 7 or 8 quid out over the counter because I budgeted to the penny and paid everything I could online - not having a debit card then, i took what I could over the counter). Customers with Full accounts didnt have this restriction, however, they had extra facilities such as the debit card where they could spend that odd change directly at a store and have absolutely no need for a counter service, yet they we'ren't restricted.

Its hard enough these days to get a basic bank account (see some other threads on here and you'll see) without being restricted once you have one in how you get access to your money.

Sorry for the rant lol :D

The banks are billions and billions and billions in debt thanks to not understanding how to manage their money properly so had to be bailed out by the tax payers. They kindly caused the worldwide recession which has impacted on everyone.

And the relevance to a building society not accepting more than 5 bags of change is?

First, this point has nothing to do with paying in change. It's a red herring comment.

Second, it's not "the banks." It's RBS Group and Lloyds Banking Group. There are a hell of a lot more banks than those two.

Third, "the banks" play no part in a thread about a building society refusing to take change.

I assumed incorrectly that NW would be recognized as Nationwide due to the thread being of this building society :)
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

And even with those two, RBS bought in their pile of rubbish from Holland!

Of the major British banks, only HBOS appears to pushed its lending from "balanced risk" to "completely bloody stupid". Oh, how Victor Blank and Eric Daniels must regret their cosy cocktails with Gordon Brown.

It is coming out now - basic account wanting upgrade!
There is always a reason why someone has a basic account and not one of them is good.

2 years ago I banked with NatWest. I had basic cash account (as I am foreign) for quite a few years. Then they gave me credit card - which I always paid on time, but they REFUSED to give me upgrade account. When I said how does that make sense they said that there is different credit check... so I passed the one for credit card - where you actually can make damage, but not the one for Visa debit card.

Well, I went to Nationwide and opened account without a problem what so ever, immediately got Visa debit card and never looked back I have to say. But then I've ever been to branch about twice.

I think personally that everything goes from branch to branch - I hated the NatWest branch in our village, yet one at my work is absolutely fantastic (we still have a joint account there).
Our village branch tried to send my OH home with bags of change, yet the one at work doesn't blink an eye.. As long as you bagged it. But when I went there for the first time, they emptied the envelopes I had it in into sorting bags for me and just warned me for the next time.

And it doesn't take much time to count, they just weight them!

I havent read all the posts on this one but have a top tip for you.

Go into a betting shop Ladbrokes, Corals etc - any one which have casino machines.

Pop in all your coins up to full £.

Press button to get money out.

You get a receipt - take it to cashier and they will give you notes.

    SIMPLES!
I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!

 I just had the worst experience ever from my Bank Manager, all becuase I wanted to pay money into my bank account.

My family and I have been put 50p, £1 and £2 coins into a saving tin for extra spending money when we go on holiday this year. Over the weekend we opened the tin and found that we had saved £120. Great I though, I'll get some bags from the Nationwide and pay the money into our account ready to be converted to dollars. I was given the bags and brought them home, then sorted the money into their correct amounts ready to go back to the Nationwide today.

As soon as I gave the bags to the cashier she said "you've got 6 bags, I can only take 5". She wanted me to come back tomorrow with 1 bag containing £10. So I would have had to pay for the petrol and an hours parking in the car park. I said that this wasn't acceptable and asked to speak to the manageress.

The manageress came storming over a few minutes later and said "this is Nationwides policy and they don't have room to store money". I started to say that we were only talking about 20 coins and that it would be a bit daft for me to have to come back. I only got half way through saying this because she asked me to be quiet and listen to her! She asked what I thought would happen if everybody tried to pay extra bags in? Well for one thing the banks would have more money! She then said that on this occasion they would make an exception, but I was never to do this again!

I left the branch feeling really angry and upset. My wife and I have banked with this branch for 22 years and to be treated like a pile of sh$t in this way and spoken to like a 5 year old is not acceptable behaviour in any form what-so-ever. How dare she speak to me like this. They are supposed to be professional.

It's nice to know that the Nationwide are in such a strong position that they are able to turn money away as when they feel fit. Money that my family have saved hard for, not buying sweets and things just so that we can fill up the tin and buy something extra on our holiday. We don't have a lot of money, so every penny is important to us. I'm just sorry that the Nationwide don't feel the same.

I have now lodged a formal complaint against the manageresses behaviour with the area manager, but to be honest I will be very surprised if I hear anything from them. I have now made an appointment to going and speak to the Halifax. They said that they have the same 5 bag policy, but never enforce it strictly. If somebody walks in with 7, 8 or 9 bags then it isn't a problem.

Sorry for such a long winded rant, but this has really p#£%ed me off and I just wanted everybody to know.

1..How extremely ignorant and rude. 2. Good for you.

One side of story. To be asked to be quiet and listen suggests that the OP was actually being loud and aggressive and had to be asked to restrain themselves. Or to put it another way, they were being ignorant and rude to the clerk.

I too was humiliated by Nationwide while trying to pay money IN.
After handing the cheque over the counter, i was asked to sign the paying in form. This I did only to be told my signature did not match my signature on my card.
It was bloody cold outside and my hands were numb, I explained.
She handed me another form to sign. Again she questiobned it with colleagues at the other tills. "What kind of crook pays money into an account with a forged signature?" I asked. Finally the manager saw sense and allowed me to pay my money into my account. Pathetic service.

Exactly what is 'humiliating' about that? I really don't see it.
