Why?
Nationwide, Halifax, Abbey, A&L and other current and former Building Societies clearly state in their account terms and conditions they can't take in more than a certain number of bags of coins from a person per day. (I've actually seen a sign up in one of these stating that.)
There as the banks like Natwest, RBS, HSBC, Lloyds and Barclays will take a lot of bagged coinage from their customers.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

The Customer is never right these days!0

I was quite surprised the other day when I tried to deposit some loose change. I had £68.73, and the cashier took it all but rejected the 73p. I asked her what if I needed to deposit that exact amount in order to pay a bill, and she just said "No, we only accept pound coins or bagged coins'.
I was just trying to round up my balance, so it didn't really matter, but I was quite taken aback, because if I DID have a bill that needed paying, and I could only afford to bank in the exact amount... well that could've been a problem.0 -

This was Nationwide, by the way.0 -
DunstonH - as I said I'm transferring because of the lack of upgrade from a cash card account to a debit card - my local branch is very easy to access so I have no issues in taking bags in over several daysProud to be dealing with my debts

It's not about the customer being right.
The customer has a choice of who to use for their banking products. Each bank places restrictions and requirements on their products, and does things slightly differently. Nationwide, due to its nature, doesn't take large amounts of coin.
This isn't unreasonable, or a case of anything being wrong with anyone. It's a business requirement - and ultimately, their right as a business to do so. If you don't like it, change banks/building societies to someone who can provide that service to you. What would William Shatner do?0 -
It is coming out now - basic account wanting upgrade!
There is always a reason why someone has a basic account and not one of them is good.0
