It is coming out now - basic account wanting upgrade!
There is always a reason why someone has a basic account and not one of them is good.

In fairness with Nationwide very few people get debit cards off the bat, so this is a bit harsh.

I was just trying to round up my balance, so it didn't really matter, but I was quite taken aback, because if I DID have a bill that needed paying, and I could only afford to bank in the exact amount... well that could've been a problem.
It wasnt that long ago that you couldnt even pay bills at building societies. I remember when the building societies used to walk their cheques and money over to the banks at the close of each day to pay it in at the bank (and I'm in my 30s, so its not that long ago).

It's been said on this thread a few times already. If you want a full banking service then go to a traditional bank. Don't expect the building societies or ex building societies to offer the full banking service. They dont need to and they dont want to.
I too was humiliated by Nationwide while trying to pay money IN.

What did they do? Come up behind you and strip you naked in front of all those queuing? ;)

After handing the cheque over the counter, i was asked to sign the paying in form. This I did only to be told my signature did not match my signature on my card.
    I...... Pathetic service.

Nationwide do not have paying-in forms. You just hand over your passbook or debit card/cashcard together with the cash or cheques. If using your card they will print you a receipt, but you don't sign it. I have paid cash and cheques into my accounts with Nationwide many times over the last 20 years and I have never had to sign anything. You only have to sign when making a withdrawal. You must have been using a different bank or building society.

That reminds me of my early cashiering days on a Halifax counter.

Huge queue packed with a mix of old ladies wanting their interest updating in their passbooks (it was 1st Feb) and businessmen on their lunch hours looking stressed.

One particular guy in the queue is getting particularly hot under the collar at the wait and, sure enough, I copped for him at my till.

He stormed over from the front of the queue, slammed his passbook down in the well and shouted "I'm fed up of the f****** lot of you. The service in this f****** place is always absymal. Now close that f****** account now and I want my money back in cash."

I calmly pulled the passbook out of the well, glanced at it and responded with a straight face "This account is for another building society sir. The Nationwide is just across the road next to the Nat West" and pushed the passbook back in his direction.

He took it and walked straight out without another word.

    Wonderful!

There is always a reason why someone has a basic account and not one of them is good.

why does there have to be a reason for someone wanting a basic bank account, and for that matter why does it have to be a bad one? Some people simply don't like banks full stop but this day and age, they have to have a bank account with one to get wages and benefits paid.

and even with a basic bank account, its not about upgrading to something better, my post in particular, was about wanting to upgrade so they couldn't screw me with the terms and conditions and stop me taking my money when i wanted it, just because i didnt have their debit card.

The banks are billions and billions and billions in debt thanks to not understanding how to manage their money properly so had to be bailed out by the tax payers. They kindly caused the worldwide recession which has impacted on everyone.

...and here we go again

A bank doesn't change it's T&C's for the fun of it - there must have been a valid reason as to why they couldn't get what they wanted.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

If every customer bought in 10+ bags each then where will the money be stored?

To be frank, not my problem. If they want my custom, they'll take my coins. :p
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
