Thanks Richard - had noticed this route when checking the airline/destination lists for every possibly airport we could use German-side whilst looking for alternatives, unfortunately the BHX flights aren't every day, one of those missing days being the day we need to fly on, lol, sods law!

The non-London options are pretty much limited to Flybe or Lufthansa from Bham or Manc, but considerably more expensive than the £21 return we paid with Ryanair.

You can fly from GLA prestwick on tue, thur and sat -easier than getting to stansted and cheaper?

Just another case of Ryanair throwing their toys out of the pram when they don't get what they want.

Or...that they offered Manchester a load of extra business if they lowered the prices, Manchester said no so Ryanair pulled out. It isn't a case of 'throwing toys'. It's a business decision to keep fares low.

I don't see why the airport can't make money as well.

Ryanair utilises slots at airports that are massively subsidised by the airports, tourist boards, and governments (even the EU), and often after opening bases believe they have them by the short and curlies for further reductions further down the line.

Manchester Airport has the balls, and most importantly financial strength to be able to say no to Ryanair. Many other airports don't have the range of alternate airlines providing business, so can afford to say no. Good for them. Ryanair has lots of other airports they can cajole into low charges.

Only people I feel sorry for are the Ryanair staff - I wonder how many of them have lost their jobs as a result of Manchester Airport calling Ryanair's bluff?

    Exactly.

Perhaps if other airlines were as ruthless as Ryanair, perhaps the industry would be in much better condition than it is at the moment.
    From Poland...with love.

    They are (they're)
    sitting on the floor.
    Their
books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.

I can't understand why people accept that Ryanair are a commerical operation who need to negotiate a the right deal, but in the same breath can forget that the airports are also a commercial operation that have to make money as well?

If every airport just let Ryanair pay what they want then all the other airlines would want a slice of the cake. Airports need to cover the astronomical cost of providing international airport facilities, to do this they have to charge airlines to land there, and have to at least cover their costs; as well as making profit for re-investment, and indeed for commercial gains (yes - just like Ryanair - the UK's airports are commercial operations!)

I can't see how having airports fighting for survival due to lack of income would be healthy for the industry?

This was a business decision on both parts. At the end of the day BOTH parties have the right to negotiate (not just Ryanair!). Manchester wouldn't just have let Ryanair walk out the door, it would have been a massive decision to do so, but at the end of the day if the deal isn't right for them fair enough? Does anybody really believe Manchester would have let Ryanair go if there was soemthing in the deal for them?

Manchester airport is owned by MAG - Manchester Airports Group. MAG also own East Midlands and Bournemouth airports - both of which have Ryanair bases that have been expanded in recent years, its not like MAG are a company that refuses to negotiate with Ryanair!
