We've been affected by this with flights booked for late October, Manchester - Frankfurt-Hahn and back again. Heard it via the news but received a text message today, shortly followed by an e-mail advising me the flights were cancelled following an operational review and a refund would shortly be issued to the original payment method.

One of our group called the day the news broke and was advised we could transfer flights and had been looking at switching to Stansted - however we never got to a decision as some of the group threw their toys out the pram at the prospect of travelling down there.

I suspect once the refunds are processed we're effectively stuffed and would have to book whatever flights we want at the current going rate (as opposed to nice and cheap when we originally booked months ago).

There are some from Birmingham BHX to Hahn HHN in late October for £4 inc free online check in.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.

Under EU law you are entitled to:

A refund of the full price you paid for your ticket within seven days for the part or parts of your journey not made (and for the part or parts already made if the flight is no longer serving any purpose in relation to your original travel plan) and a return flight to the departure airport as soon as possible.

    or

Re-routing to your final destination as soon as possible or, if you agree, at a later date. (If the airline flies you to another airport in your destination city then they must pay for the transfer to the airport you were booked for or to another close-by point of your choice)

Thanks Richard - had noticed this route when checking the airline/destination lists for every possibly airport we could use German-side whilst looking for alternatives, unfortunately the BHX flights aren't every day, one of those missing days being the day we need to fly on, lol, sods law!

The non-London options are pretty much limited to Flybe or Lufthansa from Bham or Manc, but considerably more expensive than the £21 return we paid with Ryanair.

Perhaps you could tell us what you think?

The facts are that Geoff Muirhead, Chief Exec of Man airport has stated that the terms offered to Ryanair were very favourable but they refused to accept them and therefore chose to remove their services from Manairport.

They wont be missed. Jet2 are coming to Manairport.

All Ryanair are doing is messing up the travel arrangements of hundreds of their customers. Im sure they will not appreciate it and will think twice about using ryanair again.

Ryanair is a very weird company, run by a master of spin.

O'Leary makes controversial and provocative statements in order to keep the airline in the headlines, albeit for adverse reasons.

O'Leary is also a master of double-speak.. I haven't followed this story closely, but it sounds like the finger-pointing at Manchester Airport authority is pure bluff. I suspect it's a bluff to conceal the fact that RyanAir is itself in financial distress. It's Standard Operating Procedure for Ryanair.. When they are in a mess, they very publicly blame their woes on someone else - typically the British Treasury.

Wasn't that what the financial press reported only a few days earlier when Ryanair reported a huge half yearly loss?

To axe flights from the most important British airport outside of London sounds like a radical and desperate cost-cutting measure. It's noteworthy that Ryanair also axed numerous flights to southern European destinations earlier this year. The argument then was the same - that the overseas airport authorities were overcharging and had made the routes unprofitable for the budget airline. This was clearly bluff too. The airports that Ryanair was abandoning are tinpot back-waters any way, with landing fees to reflect that.

For all its bluffing, half-truths and lies, it is difficult to warm to Ryanair. You get the feeling when you fly with them that you too will fall victim to a dose of deceit.

Since when was Manchester the most important airport outside of London...it's obviously Newcastle :p

But seriously...thats all unfounded. O'Leary's business model is to create low fares and (eventually) be able to do free flights with all revenue being created from additional extras/purchases. Why would he want to go against that ethic at one particular airport for routes that can be served by close by airports for less?

Like a customer walking into a market and saying 'If I buy an extra ten of these will I get a discount?' Offering more business on the condition the trader gives a more favourable price. Manchester declined the offer and so Ryanair went to somebody that would. Fair enough to me, if it keeps flights cheap I'm all for it.

I think this is all one big bluff.

I think that Ryanair had to do some cost cutting becuase the current climate and the state of their finances dictated it.

Now then, they wouldnt want to fess up publicly to that as it could damage their reputation.
    .

Ryanair got Manchester down to £3 per person, and it still wasn't cheap enough for Ryanair, far cheaper than any of the other airlines are getting.

Just another case of Ryanair throwing their toys out of the pram when they don't get what they want.

won't be long before Ryanair start asking customers to bring a jerry can of AvGas with them!
