  • DONT DO IT!!! I know its really hard but you will, and know you will, really regret going over budget for Christmas. From personal experience its much more fun making things ad finding cheaper presents plus more goes into them. Part of the dfw journey is surely about teaching your children that it is time and love that count - not material possessions? From what youve said they have no shortage of toys, days out, new clothes etc and saying no sometimes will make them realise that you mean what you say..otherwise they just earn that if they do the downcast, sad facey thing and you relent then it will become a learned behaviour...I know I'm being tough on you but with OH having ccj's etc I'm worried that the spending is back in the emotional spending category? Tell me if I'm wrong and to bog off if you wan to but I'm worried for you and dont want you going dow same spiral as oh...if you ca take a step back from the emotional stuff and look at it practically and finanically...hugs for you...here if you want a natter...

I know it is tough when kids are subject to peer pressure, and you are subject to financial pressure, but honestly, you will create longer term problems if you bow to that pressure now. DD will continue to expect that no matter how much mum says there is no money, she can still manage to produce nice expensive presents.......

It is hard to deal with, I know, but talk to them honestly and calmly about the realities, and don't give in.

Not looking too bad as expenses likely to be higher than thought. Also did a quidco switch to edf last night so £80 due in the new year.

Have NW card through so I can do the Bal transfer from MBNA to 3.9% LOB deal.

  • Thanks Hypno and ISOM

I will listen and try to reseist the urge to go mad. You are both right it is emotional and DD will not learn if I "find" the money again.

KP - agree, please don't go crazy over Christmas. I know *exactly* how you feel - and with having this bit of money from my PPI coming soon, the exact same thoughts have gone through my head about splashing out.

Sometimes it's hard for logic to dictate in circumstances like this because of course we all want the kids to have a fabulous Christmas... but tonnes of presents isn't the way. Think about it - if you were anything like me, as a child at Christmas there was usually one or two things I really wanted, and anything else was nice but not expected iyswim? And what I remember from Christmases as a kid are getting together with the family, watching others open their presents, watching afternoon films on the telly, Christmas dinner - being honest I can hardly remember what I got for presents...

I've never been able to buy the kids much, but as OH says they're only 5 and 3 - what will they know really? Of course when they're older they understand more about what's going on and I think it's a valuable opportunity to teach them and stand them in good stead for when they're older.

Of course I know you know all this;) and I am certain I'll be needing you to tell it back to me when I have my Christmas "have I bought enough for the kids?" panic :D
