I have a question about Sea Pearls - I looked at the website and they don;t have a string, so could they feasibly get lost inside you?

I recently came off the hormone injection contraceptive after years on it because I was worried about some side effects, haven;t restarted my periods yet but want to be prepared.

    Does anyone use Sea Pearls?

My mum used to have to make her own pads when she was young and said she frequently bled through her clothes so I won't be going down that route myself! 'Always' came in when I was at school and prior to them girls would frequently have embarrassing 'accidents' and make a mess of their skirts. We were overjoyed when 'Always' arrived.

The thing that I find a bit yukky with the idea of reusable pads is carrying them around at work. You'd presumably have to change them pretty frequently if you have heavy periods and I don't like the idea of having to keep some container in my handbag for used pads! I also have to wear suits at work which are dry clean only so prefer to security of conventional pads and tampons.

Good on anyone who takes this environmentally-friendly route, but I just find life as a woman in the modern world can be difficult enough without adding more aggro. I shall stick to recycling/re-using in other areas of my life.

Hermia - One possibility is to use reusables when at home.

I do this and mainly use them at the start and end when lighter. I personally feel comfy with this as I am reducing the amount of san pro going to land fill. I am not at all new age or anything like that I just want to do my bit for the enviroment. If everyone does something more friendly to the enviroment it should make a big difference.

Anyone got a pattern for those dress protector pads that stop deodorant and sweat wrecking clothes? I sweat a lot and am allergic to the really strong deodorants that you leave on overnight so I'm trying to think of ways to stop getting the dreaded sweat patches on everything I wear this summer.
    Thanks

Can anyone answer a slightly technical question regarding these cloth pads...? I've looked on a few of the websites and noticed that most of these pads comprise of two parts - the outer envelope (which usually comprises of the wings/poppers to attach to your underwear) and the inner pad piece.

My question is, when you perform a change, do you replace the whole lot or just the inner pad part? This is just something I wondered.

I have just read all this and it had never occurred to me to be green in this department in spite of using Kooshies for my kids when they were smaller.

I don't know why there is such disgust going on. I hope you're all just being squeamish, coz what a lucky privileged lot to have the choice really. Think for isolated villages, or the day when the planet is so poisoned then perhaps the factories will be long gone and you will have to make them yourself anyway. I bet you don't throw all your nice knickers or jeans away every time you have an accident, so no difference there for a start.

What I would like to know are really practical things, like - do the cup things leak much, how do you stay clean on the move, can you move much, are they in any way comparable to commercial products, do they stay in, can they cope with post child sort of periods, could they or do they ever fall out... etc etc etc...

I'm not sure I would dare use them in the main coz it's a deep trust thing, but they may be good for the end or for security on maybe days.

I agree with the person who says we should put the chemical and waste issue matter to the manufacturers of the commercial doobies.
