Sorry if this is a bit graphic, but I have fibroids and so have REALLY heavy flow which needs a superplus tampon and night time towel at the same time and I change about 9 times a day. I hate the idea of the digoxins but have always balked at the idea of making my own sanitary wear. Would any of the home made ideas work for me do you think?Jane

What happens is, you risk to get Toxic Shock Syndrome, which can be fatal.
Check this link for more info:

There is also a lot of info on the Women's Environmental Network campaign for reusable sanitary pads, but some of the pages are still under construction, anyway if you want to check those the link is:

Missk_ensington, I am not trying to make you change your mind, but I think it is important that women are well informed about their health issues!
Best wishes

I'm sure you've heard of Toxic Shock Syndrome, you are not supposed to leave them in two days (obviously I know accidents happen).
The reason some of my colleagues have concerns about these things being "near their bits", is that they contain unhealthy chemicals etc, as I explained. The lady in question does not use reusables but instead organic unbleached disposables that you can buy, which is a good compromise but more expensive.
I agree it is completely personal choice but I wouldn't want anyone thinking I was doing it because I was "poor" which is why I've explained my own personal reasoning.0 -
OMG I can`t believe that some people want to go the os way re pads!!!
My mother made them for us 5 girls and there was a bucket under the bath. It was such a relief to get bought pads when there was more money. It can`t be hygenic especially in this day and age and I warn you that there is a smell, which you may not notice yourself but others can. Not nice0 -

I have very heavy periods but i find i need the plastic backing from conventional pad for extra security. Some re usable sanitary products have a type of waterproof backing for security.
I do use re usuable sanitary products though, but only at the beginning and ending of my period. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Heavy blood loss is one of the reasons why they are not always suitable for everybody. The only ones I found that really work for high absorbency are a German brand, I only got a sample of one ages ago, but they are quite big.
I am sure that if you give the Women's Environmental Network a ring, the project worker will be able to direct you to a lot of manufacturers, I know they have a resource sheet (WEN link in post above).

 You're joking, right?
I get jumpy if I haven't changed after six hours - all those Toxic Shock Syndrome warnings at school and on the tampon leaflets make me very cautious. I know it's rare, but still, 2 days seems to be risking it! And as for hygiene - that makes me more squeamish than any amount of home-made sanitary protection!!
