Unhygenic? Well shop-bought tampons/pads aren't exactly sterile are they? Although they are bleached to high heaven and the fibres shed inside you -something I'd rather miss thanks! And as for being hygenic, do you get your partner to scrub his bits before he goes near you??
!
I cant stop laughing at the image of a man scrubbing away with a non stick scrubber - thank you! Just what I need today!NSD 0/150 -
A few unconnected notes on this subject..
My mum was a nurse in gynaecology and she used to tell us tales about lost or forgotten tampons and put the fear of god into me + my sis. So I'm still jumpy about tampons 25 years later! Homemade ones?? AAAAAAArgh!
Another thing is that we go lots of walks and camping trips up in the Highlands
and when we walk along teh side of sea lochs you can see the tide line on the beach and it contains among the other stuff, loads of the very recognisable plastic backing bits out of pads all washed up on the shore , and this is away up north a long long way away from centres of population - disgusting!
However I have to say I still use disposable pads but I never flush them
It's an emotive subject and many of us still feel uncomfortable about it obviouslyJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
This thread is fascinating! I saw Mooncup for the first time in Boots the other day, Im really tempted to give it a go.0

I LOVE my reusable pads and my mooncup!!!
Would NEVER go back to disposables. I find disposables gave me rashes (in and out!), smelt horrible when soiled (and I didn't leave them in too long) and I hate the plasticky noise they make (small detail I know).
I happily dry mine on the line...what's the issue?I couldn't care less if people know I use washables...they see the baby's nappies drying too so they must be convinced we're hippies!
I don't mention the fact I use washables to anyone but if they asked I would tell.
Honestly, there's nothing to get your knickers in a twist about...if it's something you find unthinkable, then you'd be better off not wasting your time on this thread but using the search engine to try to find money-off vouchers for disposables!
Seriously I don't know why people get upset at what others do with regards to their bodily functions (which is all that menstrual flow is)."Finish each day And be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and Absurdities have crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can."

This thread is very interesting. I shall be buying a mooncup soon to see how well it works for me, thank you for all the positive feedback about that.
I had never really thought about reusable pads before, something to consider when I no longer have flatmates and have some privacy for a tub to soak the pads in.
I can't understand why people think it's icky to reuse these pads - you re-use cutlery, nappies, dirty clothes and handkerchiefs don't you? Just make sure they're properly clean first! Of course menstrual blood and menstruation is still less accepted than other bodily functions, which is probably part of the reason ... (I could rant for ages but will shut up now)

can't you just use a field mouse? use it's tail as the string and when you've used it just pop it back in the field. Good for the environment and free.
Although i hope you lot who use homemade ones don't complain when your other half starts using cling film and an elastic band as a condom. If you can do homemade, so can he and you shouldn't complain.0 -

This thread has made me laugh so hard!
I don't think reusables are for me, the OH would have a hissy fit if he found them and the kids would never speak to me again if I hung them on the line. I will give the mooncup a go though, I have been thinking about it for a while. The bit that puts me off is having to boil it or put it in the dishwasher (presumably on it's own?? you wouldn't put the plates and cups in there too surely?) It's not that I have an issue with any bodily functions... I've had 3 kids! But my family are really funny about some personal things.
As an example I was reading the other day that loads of women are shaving their faces these days, it seems it is the perfect exfoliator, no need for scrubs and creams. The other half ranted on for 10 mins about how horrified he would be to find me in the bathroom one morning with a full face of shaving foam :rotfl:
I might pop into boots tomorrow though and have a look at the mooncup, I noticed the advantage card machine has extra points on them if anyone else is thinking about one.:A

I don't know what all the fuss is about when people talk about reusable sanitary protection. I had been thinking about it for a while, partly because of the environmental and financial cost of disposables, but mostly because I find I'm getting sore from disposable pads. Wouldn't try the mooncup since when I tried tampons I found them uncomfortable no matter what, but had been thinking of making my own reusable pads.
I showed hubby this thread and the patterns for them, he was far from disgusted, in fact he was making his own suggestions on improving the design so it'd stay put better!!
I think it is just a matter of how open you are with your other halves about physical issues, we're just comfy discussing things like this, after all, it's perfectly natural.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
what happens when your out and about or on holidays to warmer climes:eek: , i wouldnt fancy carrying a soiled towel in my handbag.
So sorry another vote for disposables here.0 -
You don't have to wear reusable pads everywhere. I was thinking about using them only when I'm at home (I work part time from home) and it's convenient for me. I'd have to try them out for awhile before I started wearing them to work or on holiday!0
