    What they said.....

I'm not surprised you're feeling drained - this has to be incredibly intense, emotionally, to see your beloved little pets under such strain. I hope everything turns around tomorrow, Wol.

Bandit's naughty bits have been given the all clear .... (but they were slightly "re-arranged" owing to the effect of the surgery so I need to apply vaseline to keep them in their proper places.....lucky Bandit!!.:rotfl:)

Fleure's teeth were fine...so they did X rays and have found the problem..:(
I have spent the afternoon researching the net and identified two possible treatments that won;t harm her but are worth a try... Just off now to pick her up and discuss the alternatives with the vet as I am not giving up yet.....

    Back later

Fleure has kidney stones.....vet says they are inoperable and prognosis not good. :(From the Xrays, she appears to have several in each kidney and one large one that got stuck further down that they have now removed. (I suspect this latter one is what started the no eating problem/pain )

However following my research, he has agreed to consider testing the one they removed to check its chemical compostion. If it's what they think it is (calcuim oxalate) then we shall just have to make a decision as and when regarding pain/quality of life for Fleure. However, if it is found to be calcium carbonate.......he will discuss with the other vets prescribing the medication I have found on the internet (which is used a lot in the US for piggie stones) which might help to dissolve them sufficiently so they can be passed through the system. There are very few treatments/medicines licensed for use on guinea pigs in the UK.....vets have to make a decision whether to risk prescribing "off-license"....and naturally some are more prepared to do so than others...... so we are in their hands.

She will also have to have a major change in diet...but we won;t know what changes to make until we know the composition of the stone. However this also means she will probably not be able to go back in with Grommie.:(..(although I don;t think she is particularly concerned at the prospect ;))

All this may be immaterial by tomorrow however....she is not recovering well from the anaesthetic.....looks like another late night tonight....

Buffy....it's great to hear you have two little girlies..:j:j...more penpals for my bachelor boys....Maple and Willow are feeling left out now that the other boys are "dating" Lemon Tree's three :D:D:D Please post some piccies ;);)

  • Oh dear on the Kidney Stone front. I remembering having many off licence conversations with my vet - the first one I had, a wonderful guy never gave ever on any of them. He saw me cry more then anyone else.

the next lot not so hot. but it is a risk I guess.

I will post pics when I pick them up. quite worried about them, the girl seems nice but is very young and ditsy.

    sending positive vibes

    Buffy xxxx
    Nevertheless she persisted.

Well I never want to go through the last 12 hours again....Fleure seemed to give up when she got home, kept crawling away from the heat source/towels keeping her warm, head drooped down (classic behaviour of piggie who is dying) and wouldn;t eat. Left her to settle down, swaddled in towels, and one hour later when I checked, she had again crawled away and was as cold as a hibernating hamster, (that's dead cold!), barely conscious and couldn;t stand up _pale__pale_ . Stuffed her under my jumper to warm her up, petrified she was too far gone and arranged with new vet to go up to surgery with her once I had got her stabilised. No way could I afford to put her down for even 30 secs until she could survive the journey with heating pads for warmth.....finally managed to coax a few drops of Complan down her, then liquid feed, and then a few blades of grass all the time trying to warm her up. Longest 30 mins of my life I think.:o
Lovely lady vet :A:A spent 40 mins forcing her to take 10ml of liquid feed, gave her more fluids injections..and we had a long discussion about oxalate and carbonate stones and the causes of each, Fleure's chances (now a lot better:T), the piggie diet etc etc. (They are sending the stone off for testing and she was very interested in what I had researched on the net.:T) Then back home to keep Fleure swaddled in towels on the warming pads, reheating them every hour (microwave wheat wraps...absolutely brilliant). I couldn;t afford to leave her unattended as I had to keep her awake and force fed every 30 mins (she would start to eat a bit of food and would then keep fading away), and make sure she remained in contact with the heat source but didn;t get too hot.

Finally at 4am this morning I reckoned it was safe to sleep for three hours....had a business meeting this morning, absoutely knackered!

And to cap it all, Grommie stopped eating his greens last night..and lost 40g of weight over the course of yesterday....:eek:......here we go again........
Now Grommie may be pining for Fleure, he is definitely missing her, but just in case, I have booked them both in at new vets tonight and will ask for an Xray for Grommie to check for stones or anything else untoward . (Would explain why Grommie periodically goes through non-eating/weight loss crises......which we had put down to his teeth so he used to go in every 6 months for a dental).

Anyhow, when I got back from my meeting today .Fleure is much more like her old self (bodily functions all re-instated :j....although still not eating very much and not putting on weight yet.... but considering she has virtually been raised from the dead, I am not too worried at this point).....I have had a massive lump in my throat all day, but am too tired to cry with relief yet......

So here's a happy ending to the saga......I thought it would be a good idea to reunite her with Grommie this afternoon now she is strong enough.....(and hopefully encourage him to eat): I am truly amazed at the difference in Fleure compared to 12 hours ago :T....she's even given Grommie a good groom (clearly he got into dirty habits whilst she's been away :rotfl:)

    Aint love grand!!:heartsmil:heartsmil:heartsmil

Fleure & Grommie look really happy together - I am glad that the pair of them are on the mend..I can imagine Fleure had a good old moan at Grommie to getting into a mess:rolleyes:

Am pleased with the new vets too - they seem much nicer than the old crowd and certainly more understanding of piggies.

Try and have an early night tonight Wol..may a slurp or two of pink elephant juice would be nice too.:D

It does seem like that doesn;t it BOB....stop the world I want to get off :rotfl:

Fleure is at the vets holding Grommie's paw while he has his Xray done.......they didn;t want to be split up :grinheart

I am so pleased that Grommie is going to get properly diganosed at long last :T

Hope you're fully recovered from your recent excursion now BOB ;)
