Thanx Hun :A
Let's hope the vet looks as good as he sounds...;):D
xx
Actually folks, I feel a lot better now I;ve cancelled this weekend's plans
Returned this afternoon from village chemist armed with microwave wheat warming pack, digital thermometer, Complan, and tubigrip (for Bandit - he's re-operned his wound by nibbling at it so needs a piggie straight jacket :rotfl:)
Force feeding Fleure every couple of hours with Liquid feed and now Complan as well ...she is NOT happy about it..:o.but it's (eventually) going down her throat..:j..and it's good she still has energy to wriggle and nip....:T
Decided I will also bring Beech in tonight for obs as he is a little too quiet/inactive and his coat is dull and greasy........OMG I here you say..not ANOTHER one!!
Hmmmmm..I think these piggies are conspiring against me...I build them a lovely Piggie palace (with heating) so I can have my dining room back this winter,......and yet they're trying any old ruse to get to come back indoors ......:rotfl:
....or maybe they're just missing Numpty:D:rotfl:
In case anyone's wondering why it's all happening chez Wol atm....I had upped the vigilance since they moved in to Piggie Palace .but still missed the signs with Pebble......Over the years, I have noticed that the incidence of sick piggies tends to adhere to the "London Bus" principle..:rotfl:...... particularly when there is a step change in the weather/environment.....like now ... because that's when things "brewing" start to flare up.....(and let's not forget 5 of them had "knadgering" ops a couple of months ago ..so while they didn;t develop post-op infections like Bandit..they may have been weakened enough for something to start incubating)
Piggies are prey animals and, apart from abcesses, urinary or respiratory infections, they don;t tend to show clinically visible signs of being unwell until it is too late to save them..(Pebble is a classic example.... ). They can have e.g. kidney problems, diabetes, thyroid problems, cancers and heart problems...just like us....... but these are not diagnosed, therefore not treated, and eventually piggie dies from either an opportunistic infection owing to its weakened state...or from the undiagnosed condition
In the US....a full diagnostic work-up on a sick piggie can end up costing up to $3000 .....but they do it!! Trouble is, in the UK there are few piggie vet specialists so most vets rely on seeing clinical symptoms before they will act....and as they don;t have the experience to say look at xrays and ultrasound and interpret results, they won;t order tests..(not that there's many places in the Uk that have the right equipment/test in the first place for Piggies)..So they really only deal with teeth, "knadgerings" and infections...not the other stuff.
It also doesn't help that there are virtually no piggie insurance policies (bar one which quoted me £950 per year for 13 pigs )
No surprise therefore that the UK vets choose the "wait and see" over the "huge diagnostic bills" approach....which I totally understand.
So us UK Piggie fanatics can just try and work the system.....but it needs a good deal of mutual trust and respect between a Vet and the Piggie owner if it is to work for the piggy's best interests.
And ......in the words of U2...."I still haven't found what I'm looking for...."
Wol climbs down off soapbox..:o

Fleure has been (successfully) force fed 10ml (10g) of gloop over the last 4 hours..(5ml per hour which is max piggie stomach capacity)...and has lost 10g in weight over the same period _pale__pale_
(I have been keeping a chart)
OK...double the dose...but something here isn't adding up ....
..hope the V.E.T. is easy on the eye tomorrow
PS Beechie boy seems to have undergone a "miraculous recovery" since he was brought into the dining room a few hours ago;):rotfl:...Hmm let's see what happens when he gets a B.A.T.H. tomorrow :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Without wishing to be too presumptious...that Beechie boy is a complete sham :rotfl::rotfl:.... 3 hours inside the house and he is up to his usual tricks...wheeking away..standing sentry out the front of his cage...noseying into whatever's going on :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:...Lovely to see him back to his normal self :T:T
This piggie psychology is doing my head in :wall::wall::wall::wall:
