BUT from June 02 I have been told, by talktalk today, that I WILL be able to use 18185 to override their service.(I think they charge 20ppm to a dutch mobile, rather than 2p with 18185!)
Does anyone know whether I should trust this answer?
If they put their equipment into the exchange could they stop it being overridden?
18 months is a long contract and I want to be sure before swapping over!
Ask them to put that in writing. If it's genuine, they should have no problem doing that, they're a big enough company now.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I have had a call today from Primus offering me Broadband and free phone calls (peak and off peak) for £18.45 per month. Primus told me that Martyn actually promotes them as the cheapest phone provider in UK.

Has anyone else been called or signed up and is this a good deal?

Sorry if these 2 queries have been asked before. I have not passed through all the 54 posts. I am thinking about using Euphony vs the other one [I can't remember what the name is].
I make some daytime calls to landline. Your note says go to Euphony if you do more than ten calls. My query is, ten calls per what period?
Second question, perhaps silly. I assume that I will not have to change my home phone number if I go to Euphony or any of them for that matter. Correct?
  • I am with NTL for both phne and broadband and all in I pay approx £50/month so it was easy to see that it was worth moving to BT to be able to sign up for Talk Talk - I made the call to BT on Monday, booked to have our old BT line reconnected etc. On Thursday NTL rang to ask why we were going back to BT, when I said it was to go to Talk Talk they matched the deal (excluding International calls). i.e I am now paying NTL £20.99/month for broadband and free local & national calls 24x7. I will use the override providers for my International calls. Just thought others should know that NTL are willing to match the Talk Talk deal, so others should try it.
  • Looks like another provider geting in on the act. Euro1net are offering a surf & talk package for £9.99/month which includes unlimited 01 and 02 calls and 8Mb broadband. You stay with BT for line rental. http://www.euro1net.com/freebroadband/

This looks like a good deal to me, has anyone tried this?

It'll be very interesting to see if Euro1net can sustain this offer. It is similar to the V21 package for £9-98, if you take their FreeTalk calls package, although free 01/02 calls are not included.

However, after a few months, V21 have now had to admit that they are losing money on the offer and have invoked a £2 per month minimum call charge (after many assurances that there would be no minimum charge!).

So the deal is now effectively £11.98 pm - although some would say this still isn't bad. So I'll be surprised if Euro1net can make it pay - with 01/02 calls included too!

Thanks to all who encouraged negotiations with current provider, in my case NTL.

I phoned the Freephone number posted saying I wanted to disconnect as TalkTalk offered a better deal. We have TV, Broadband and 24 Unlimited Phone amounting to approx £55 a month before any mobile or non-geographical calls which aren't included in the 24 Unlimited deal. Initially he just said OK I'll arrange to have you disconnected. However, after having held on 20 mins I was not giving up without a fight. I said "well what can you offer?" he seemed reluctant to do anything and offered £5 off for 3 months. This was not good enough so I started piling on all the advantages of Talk Talk and eventually after much discussion I was offered £15 off are £55 for 12 months - a saving of £180, PLUS a refund on all international calls for 12 months. We have to phone up when our bill comes in and say we have been told they will be refunded and I suppose they are hoping we will forget this........ but I won't.

Anyway not bad for 30 or so minutes effort and for the 20 I was waiting I had the phone on 'speaker phone' and was able to get on with other things.
We'll certainly be taking advantage of the Free international calls.

    Override BT

Hello, I just checked my statement with Primus which I use over a BT line. Noticed that when I use 084486188585 to call overseas, on top of 1p per min charged by 084486188585, I'm also paying BT peak/offpeak charges! When I used Tele2 it never happened. I wonder if anyone has had similar experience. Cheers.

I think you've got an extra digit in that number but, assuming it should start 0844 861, the (BT) cost is, indeed, 1p/minute (see HERE).

Further to previous similar questions, Primus appear to still be in a state of confusion with regard to their charges for calls to 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers.

They say they charge the BT undiscounted rate for calls to 0845 numbers for all calls to 0844 and 0845 numbers and the BT undiscounted rate for calls to 0870 numbers for all calls to 0870 and 0871 numbers.

That is why your call to what should have been a 1p/minute 0844 number cost you more. If you check, you'll see you were charged the BT undiscounted rate for a call to an 0845 number.

As you know, the MSE Callcheckers show prices from a BT residential landline so the best way to ensure you pay the prices quoted on them is to prefix such calls with 1280 and send them out via BT, not via your CPS.
