If you feel your paperwork is sensitive enough to need shredding then I too am surprised that you let it out of your sight! In our house hubby either burns it or I take it to work and shred it there in my lunchbreak - my colleagues and I then fight over the shreddings for pet bedding/composting.

  • Yes, I did think about security, but then I also knew they handled the confidential paper waste of a lot of local businesses where our personal data is being handled by strangers too; so it wasn't a total leap in the dark.

I didn't have a garden I could burn it in, though if I had had that would probably have been my preferred method. Also it was too much to have done with one of the small shredders bought in most stores.

Happy_camper....what do you do with shredded stuff to turn it into fueL? Have lots of stuff which could be shredded but sort of soaking and making bricks from it I can imagine how I could use it in fuel stove in kitchen.

Shred the paper, then soak it in water and kind of scrunch big handfuls so the water comes out again, we make it into ball shapes and then put them on an airer/type thing in the garage to dry them out. Takes a few weeks to dry thoroughly but are ace in the wb stove.

We don't use the itsy-bitsy shredding bin they come with. Ours is on top of a kitchen (flip top) bin (obviously without the flip-top bit!) :)

I only have a small cheap shredder, i'll normally tear the top off documents with my name or numbers on and shread that and the main body of any letters can then go in the recycle bin.
Every so often i'll empty the shreader into the compost bin.

I remove names/addresses/account numbers from EVERYTHING - very easy to do just snip out with a pair of scissors. Then it all goes in the recycling bin.

Names/addresses/account numbers are then cut into the tiniest slivers of paper using my sharpest scissors and then get put into the household rubbish bin.

I'm pretty certain that I manage to remove all essential information. If I knew anybody who had 'furries' they would get them for pet bedding.

We don't use the bin either. As when we have a shredding session it does take some time :rotfl:

We use a bin liner attached to a couple of bits of straight metal jammed in a drawer.

    Works for us.

personally, i rip up all my paperwork personally. I recycle all bits which are not important and take care to carefully tear around important bits, the important bits i burn, or soak. Soaking does work. If you can soak them, then crush them or grind them, they will almost dissapear.

I have two waste paper bins in the hall and when I sort the post I usually tear names and address off any bumph and out that in one of the bins which gets emptied into the kitchen bin periodically and then put the rest in a bin for paper recycling. If it's more sensitive than that it goes in a pile for shredding but as I have switched to paperless statements for most things I don't get too much stuff that has to be shredded. This takes seconds and ensures the psot doesn't get on top of me. I have also signed up for that service that stops you getting junk mail but I can't say I've seen much reduction yet.

I stuff the shredded papers into the inner tubes from loo rolls and use them as kindling for the woodburner in the winter. It burns fairly cleanly because it's all compacted and saves my firelighters and kindling

Did I mention that DH laughs at me?
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
