How much time can you carry over from one year to the next kindofagilr? I think that fattybooboo is right, and you will be cutting it a bit fine to have your maternity leave not start until the day before your due date, and you might end up losing some full pay time. Not all first babies are late - I'm on number 3, and although mine were all full term babies, I've never got further than 38 weeks with any of them, and the first arrived the next working day after I started my maternity leave! I'd be inclined in your shoes, to work out how much leave you can carry forward, and build that leeway into your plan, so that if baby does come earlier than 40 weeks, you don't lose very much of it.

Normally you can carry 10 days to the next annual leave period

But when you are pregnant they let you carry as much as you want over (same as someone who is on long term sick, you cant really take your leave can you if you are not there lol

Its 6 and 2 3's which way I do it? I could start my maternity leave on 15 feb and then tag the 7 weeks AL on the end from 15th Nov to 2nd Jan, instead of on the start?

    Does that make sense?

I just asked my EO and she I can take 3 weeks prior to ML then add the 3 plus 1 week of BH's

Are you sure you will definitely want to go back to work when ML is over? If so, it might make sense to take your mat leave first, and tag all your leave over to the end. The reason I say this is that the first 6 weeks of mat leave are 90% of your current pay, and your AL will be 100% pay at whatever your then salary is. If you've had an annual increment or cost of living payrise when off on mat leave, you'll end up better off by doing it that way. Added to which, your outgoings are going to be higher at the end of your period of mat leave than they will be before bubs is born, just because you'll have an extra little person in the family to buy for, who will be needing clothes, food and nappies on a seemingly never ending basis (most of which stuff you'll have already bought for your newborn by the time your last day of work comes round).

    Hi ladies,

    Welcome to Muso :)

Kindof - I'm due March 8th, according to latest scan, it's varied between 8th and 13th so sometime around then I guess, whenever he/she decides! You get some good maternity pay, 26 weeks at full pay is brilliant.

Ahhh Xmas Joey is just gorgeous bless him, given me an idea too, OH loves the name Joseph but I'm not 100%, Joey is a really sweet compromise, will put it to him later!

Fitzio I actually left the voucher in the car and only realised when we'd been walking about 10 minutes - sent him running back to get it, bless him it was absolutely boiling aswell! Hope you get your DH to go, it's so good, I ate it yesterday too...think I might go again tomorrow, wonder if that constitutes a craving so I have an excuse? haha

Ah WM what a little cutie Alex is!

Just about stopped being in a strop now so come to catch up again :) turned up to my hospital appointment after faffing around all morning waiting for it only to be told it'd been cancelled, ARGH. On the bright side, OH and I went for a wander around town and got sprog a couple of sweet little bits from H&M - their baby things are lovely. Then we went for sushi and ate til we couldn't move :)

Oooh whilst I was at the hospital we saw a girl in labour hanging around the front doors, OH and I looked at each other in shock/horror, don't think either of us can quite envisage it being us!

Mine's a girl due a week today -very jealous of those having them early but also happy for LO to cook til she ready - all nine months have been problem free and apart from turning over in bed at night, I'm still not too uncomfy so cook away little girl. OH is very impatient though and told me yesterday he only loves a a little bit at the mo cos I stopping him meeting his baby girl lmao. He already has two DD (15 and 18) and can't wait for the new arrival. He'll love me fully again once she here :rotfl:

Congrats to Glam, WM and XL. Off to read your birth stories now - especially XL as we got the same pool so very intriegued (sp) as to what went on!

Keep hoping next time I post it will be to say that she's on her way xxx

Sorry to dissapoint jam but i never got to use my pool :-( it was all set up and ready to go but never got to get in it. I did find some really cute rubber duckies that glow in the water from the local gadget shop as i didnt like the idea of all that water and fairy lights around the room and with a plastic pool i didnt think candles would be a very good idea either.

I hope yours goes to plan hopefully i will get my water birth next time round ;-) x

Hi!! Just popping on before I go to work for 1pm. Thanks Kindof and Glam for all the info about the TT Manual Breast Pump as that is the one I have got too. I got the kit and 3 spare bottles. Didnt really think about getting an electric steriliser too so will look into that tonight.

Glam, my turn to ask a silly question now, to sterilise the bottles with the box that came with the pump, do you just put them in the box and zap in the microwave, or is there more too it than this? Sorry I should go upstairs find out the instructions, dont worry if you are busy, Ill look tonight. xx

Hand pump - OMG, I'll have forearms like Arnie at this rate! Might look at electric pumps cos my arms are killing!

You wash the breast pump in warm soapy water, rinse. Add 100ml of water to the box, add the dismantled pump, put lid on, move little flower thing on top. Zap for 6 mins, leave for 3 mins to cool. Put flower back in hole - it's done and sterilised.

I then use the box to keep sterilised bottles in once I have put them together.

Bank holidays only accure if you get below a minimum amount of leave, I think it's around 25 days but can't remember. Glam will know! I get 27 days leave a year so my bank holidays don't accure but my leave days do however I'm only allowed to carry over 9 days each year so if I don't take all but 9 before I start ML I loose them - however HR said they would be a bit flexible if I had planned to take them but couldn't because baby came early or whatever.

    Right, Bank Holidays

By law you are entitled to 28 days bank holiday. Some companies give 20 days PLUS 8 bank holidays, others offer 28 days including Bank Holidays.
If you get 20 days PLUS bank holidays then you will accure the bank holidays, however if you get 28 days holiday - that's all you will accure.

I get 30 days holiday PLUS 8 bank holidays so technically my employer only has to let me accure the 30 days and not the 8 Bank Holidays but they don't realise that :shhh:

Glam – hello, glad the feeding is going ok. Are you doing a mixture of breast and bottle then? I imagine I will end up doing this but some of the advice says it confuses babies and others say that babies are adaptable! Hope it’s all going well anyway.

I was told that in order to avoid nipple confusion you should breastfeed for the first 3 weeks and then in week 3 introduce a bottle if you want to do mixed feeding. Jack is currently on formula and breast milk because I can only manage to express about 10mls everytime I do it which isn't enough for him.

I was cup feeding him the forumla so that I could still try him on the breast when my milk comes in - cup feeding is where you literally put the milk to his lips in a small cup and he laps it up.

It was taking ages and he wasn't having much (20ml) so he now has a bottle which either has formula or boobie juice in it.

Gorgeous pics of xmas and WM LO's - I am looking at Jack now and can't imagine life without him.

Having a few issues with OH - he's moaning he's so tired and rundown and that he's having to do so much. He was up with him for 20mins while I made a bottle - I was up with him for 4hrs!!!

I am amazed at how I am functioning on such little sleep!!!!
A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

Where does the time go?

XL we filled the pool today - it took 40 mins to fill and ages to empty! As long as LO arrives safe, thats all that matters in the end - wherever she may arrive. Will hopefully be posting a BS very soon and so can let you know - the best laid plans of mice and men etc etc :rotfl:

correct me if i am wrong ,, isnt it advised not to eat sushi or raw fish while pregnant ? i only remember this as there is lots food on there which i cant eat which upset me , brie , parma ham , sushi :(

here from cow and gate site

    Food and drink to avoid

Healthy eating during pregnancy is as much about which foods to avoid as which foods to eat. Some food may harm your baby as well as making you ill, so food safety needs to be a priority. Now that you’re pregnant, you should really leave the following foods out of your diet:

    • Undercooked or raw eggs, or foods likely to be made with them, (including home-made mousses, ice cream and mayonnaise, all of which may be made with raw eggs). Eggs should be cooked until hard.
    • Undercooked or very rare meat and fish – there should be no pink bits left (even if that’s the way you usually like it!).
    • Raw fish in dishes like sushi, smoked salmon or oysters.
    • Raw or cured meat like steak tartare or parma ham.
    • Unpasteurised milk, cheese or yogurt.
    • Soft cheeses like brie, camembert, ricotta, or blue veined cheeses (ordinary cheddar cheese, cream cheese or cottage cheese is fine, as long as they are pasteurised – check the label!).
    • Pât! or liver – these can have excessive amounts of vitamin A which can harm your baby.
    • Some prepared foods such as potato salad or coleslaw can sometimes contain high levels of listeria.
    • Check that any ready meals or reheated foods are piping hot all the way through before you eat them.
    • Swordfish, marlin and shark. These fish can contain potentially unsafe levels of mercury which can harm your baby’s developing nervous system. Tuna also contains mercury, so limit the amount you eat to up to four medium-size cans (140g drained weight, per can) OR two fresh steaks (up to 170g raw weight, per steak) a week.
    • Peanuts – the Department of Health recommends that women should avoid eating peanuts during pregnancy and breastfeeding, especially if there is a family history of allergies such as asthma, eczema or hayfever.
    • Alcohol – excessive alcohol intake has been associated with many foetal problems, and even moderate alcohol consumption may effect the development of your baby’s brain.
Dont forget that little Thanks button , only takes a sec
