  • Basically I've been off sick from work since start of June and my sick note doesn't run out till the end of October. So far no one at work has wanted to see me etc, but about 2 weeks ago I got this letter saying pop in for a m eeting with the area manager and someone from head office. The letter says its to discuss my continued absence and how they can help me recover or somesuch wording. Seeing as this is the first interest they have paid me I think i`m fired. I not sure how this will effect my benifits etc, and who the hell will employ me pregnant if i am for a few months.

I'm not very up on the legalities of it all but surely they can't fire you based on preg related illness. My company wants to see us once we have been off for more than a month and that is to see what they can do to help us get better and not make things worse when we do go back. Think it is a legal requirement now related to the amount of people suffering with stress that companies have to be seen to be offering support to their staff.

I really wouldn't worry until you know there is something to worry about IYKWIM as any extra stress/worry will not do you or baby any good at all.

Fishcake i shouldnt worry to much they cant just sack you at the the end of one meeting they have to follow a proper procedure and as you have had no contact at all it is probably a fact finding mission on there part ie whats wrong when do you think you will be well and is there anything they can do that would help with your return to work. Do they know you are pregnant?

They can't fire you - they could ask you to go and see their Occupational Health Dept for an assessment. They probably want to meet with you to discuss why you are off and what they can do to help you return to work.
For example, if you were signed off due to 'stress at work' they have an obligation to find out what is causing the stress and what they can do to reduce it so that you can return. Or, if it was back pain and you did a manual job they would maybe discuss with you changing your role.

They can't just fire you especially if you are off sick or pregnant.

Could u not put meeting off until after your scan and then tell them you are pregnant? They deffo can't get rid of you then!

Oh, and I got offered a job when I was 7 months pregnant to start after mat leave so it is possible if you are the right person. Don't forget, there will be lots of places looking for temporary staff over Christmas!

  • Thanks Harley,
Unforchantly I am off with mental health issues so it isnt baby related, but I will try and stay positive. As the meetings on the thursday I`m going to concentrate on Fridays scan to get me through.

I did mine at about 25 weeks - OMG talk about 'Out of sight, out of mind'

Been trying to keep on top of it now every week - I use an electric razor so it doesn't matter if I can't see as long as I get my vitals out the way!!!
