the 16 week bloods are for the triple or quadriple test - this is different to the Nuchal Scan.

Nuchal Scan looks for downs markers in the spine and nasal bone and the bloods are much more specific than the ones taken at 16 weeks - I think they are something like over 90% accurate.

The tests done at 16 weeks are just blood markers and are about 60% accurate.

I didn't have the 16 week bloods as they don't advise it if you have the Nuchal Scan - our risk came back at 1 in 10,000.

I really don't think you were meant to have had it - might be worth a call to MW. There are more hospitals that DON'T offer it than ones that do IYSWIM

    HTH

I heard this too (that they don't advise having both) but the explanation didn't make any sense - particularly when we went for the nuchal scan privately and they did the bloods as routine with it!

They used both sets of data to produce the risk factor...

I think that the bloods on there own are only 60% accurate but by combining the bloods with the measurements they can provide a more accurate result. If that makes any sense! Can't believe I can remember that from so long ago (even thou it only feels yesterday)

So what have you got planned for your first week of Mat Leave?

  • Yes exactly - so why advise against having both? It makes far more sense to me to have more data than less! As I said, the private place offered the scan and bloods together so we just went for that and ignored the MW :D

Tomorrow DH is off too so he's coming along to the NCT girls' tea and cake session (he loves it - being with all girls!) and maybe we'll pop to the cinema... Wed I've got a tutorial as the plan is to keep going with my doctorate while I'm off (ha ha.... we'll see how far I get!) Thu Dad's coming for lunch and Friday another lunch out!

Am quite pleased to have at least one thing per day in the diary but will need to find some other bits n bobs to do or will become total daytime tv couch potato (which always makes me feel depressed!) TBH there's not a lot left to do baby-wise so not sure what to get up to! Weird feeling not to have to be somewhere all day!

My first week was visitors every day and second week I had appointments every day so it has flown - I've not watched any TV but at the same time haven't finished the house or nursery yet.

Once that is finished - hopefully by Thursday, I plan to starting vegging out and getting as much rest as possible!!

  • Good for you!

Have to admit there's a fair bit of resting going on in the Den too... I need at least one nap a day and could probably do 2 shorts ones, one late am, one late pm! Feel a bit useless as DH is doing so much more!
