I've done a 2 week work placement at my local newspaper [initially one week then they asked me back to help out when they were short staffed], I'd love to do more,
but the paper has now merged with central Bristol and are a nightmare to work for, apparently.
All other placements seem to be London, which I cant afford/am not really well enough to get to right now,
but I'm on the look out for some remote placements so I can work from home!

I keep pondering whether I'm hindering myself by not having a degree. I've done a college course, which I passed with flying colours, and am going to do as much NCTJ as possible
but again, health wise, right now uni isn't an option and I'm quite keen to just push through and make my own way :o I just hope I'm not aiming for the impossible!

It's a difficult one. The barrier will be proving you can do it, because an employer won't be able to say 'oh, she's got a degree, she MUST be intelligent and able!'. It's sad that graduates are automatically presumed clever when some are lazy, and people without degrees are presumed less worthy of higher roles. There are lots of inspiring stories on this website about people who worked their way up without a degree and are now multi billionaires (or something!) in charge of graduate minions!

The best way to find placements is to pick up every free magazine you see. My placement was at Excelle, which is a free fashion/lifestyle mag delivered to rich stay at home mothers and glamorous retirees in Wetherby (small Yorkshire town). It was SO not what I wanted to do but I got my foot in the door (yawn, hate that phrase) and went from there.

The newspaper stuff sounds really good. You're right about most stuff being in London, but there are journalism communities across the country and there's some great stuff produced outside the capital - you just have to find it! :)

LiR... thanks (I think!)! I'll have a scout around tonight and report back. :)

Thanks for that GG- I'm more than prepared to fight to prove I'm able, and do scour regularly for possible placements nearby,
it's just unlucky that where I live, there is very little in way of free magazines and papers. I'll keep plodding on,
now I've got this far (compared to where I was a few years ago) I'm not giving up on it!

Afternoon all, it really is grim up north today - grey, dark and damp. Everybody's outfits sound lovely today, so I'm unfortunately going to lower the tone. Thankfully, I don't need to go out, so I'm staying put. I'm looking like a bit of a bag lady today - got some clearing and some minor repairs to do, so I'm wearing an ancient (late 80s) pair of baggy dungarees, old sleeveless grey tshirt, bare feet (but toenails painted with NailsInc Victoria purple polish, freebie with Glamour mag).

I was a bit naughty yesterday and treated myself to a small bottle of Diptyque Tam Dao perfume as there was 20% off, so I smell of sandalwood.

Think I'll have a Maltesers hot choc before I set to work. Have a good day everyone

Great results Daisy, good luck with the course.

    Hey All!

Well done on the results, Daisy!

Been for a swim this morning, it's grey and miserable here but no rain. I've got to settle down and do my accounts, find an (ethical) annual travel insurance policy (which includes cover for pre-existing conditions and allows for stays over 45 days) plus cheap parking near Manchester Airport for three weeks...a fascinating afternoon, I don't think!

Just updated my blog with today's outfit:
Black Monsoon Fusion lace dress (£9 sale)
    Purple tights
    Vintage loafers (Jumble Sale 25p)
Aubergine vintage leather coat (£3 chazza shop)
Silver tribal bangles and rings (India)
Choker made from rupee coins (India)
Filgree disc earrings (H&M via boot sale 50p)
Vintage leather satchel (30p car boot sale)
    Trilby hat (Boyfriend's wardrobe)

Hope you have more fun this afternoon than I will!
    xxxx

Grrr, just come back on for a rant!! I've been waiting for a redelivery of a parcel today, just been on the website to see when the last delivery today is, put my tracking number in and it's not on the van!

I'm so cross, I've just put some gloves on and done to husband's Slam Man what I would have liked to have done to customer services!

Goanmad, love the colour of those tights. I picked up some Dior coloured tights last week for 20p a packet in a charity shop (I don't feel right calling stuff from the 80s vintage :rotfl:) - lilac, foxglove, scarlet and a raspberry pink.

Isn't that so annoying?.... and it only gets worse in the run up to Xmas..
I cheated with the tights, I didn't think the colour was intense enough so I popped a pale grey pair on underneath - warm legs and even purpler.
I used to love those Dior tights back in the 80's and used to wear them under fishnets - great find, Jaq. xx

OOh, I want to experiment layering tights now

(and also want to buy more tights)

I've never seen any in the charity shops here. Once again I'm missing out haha.

I'm debating scouring ebay for a "snazzy" christmas pair for work :p

They're often stuck in shoe boxes in amongst the bric-a-brac or in the underwear basket.

It's great fun layering tights - you either intensify the colour or create a weird new shade. You should definately try coloured tights under fishnets or lacey tights - it was my "thing" in the 80's. xxx

I love block colour tights under lace ones. Looks fab!

I didn't get to go shopping in the end... was at work 'til 7pm and just couldn't face it! No blog update either as I changed into my sweats as soon as I got through the door!

Just settling down to watch Gossip Girl with a bowl of pasta and a glass of much needed wine. Happy Tuesday all! :)
  • Morning all!

Well done on your results and best of luck Daisy!

Work for me today, and my outfit today is:

    - Dark grey tweed square neck pinafore style shift dress (Miss Selfridge)
    - Long sleeved black and white striped shirt (donated by sister)
    - Black tie (old school tie) tucked into pinafore
    - Black tights (M&S)
    - Black Mary Jane shoes with chunky heels (M&S)
    - Black military style flared jacket (New Look) to come into work
    - Multicoloured stripey scarf, beanie hat and mittens (Accessorize) to come into work
    - Brown leather handbag (21st birthday present from parents)
    - Usual jewellery (birthday/Christmas/graduation presents from parents and boyfriend)

Hair is straightened and messed up with Lee Stafford spray wax, perfume is Body Shop Aqua Lily, and no nail polish - I'm trying to decide whether to do my nails clear or in Nails Inc South Molton Street (pale pink) for my interview tomorrow.

I'm in work until around three or four, then off to get the train down to London for my interview tomorrow morning so I'll do some last minute prep on the train. I'm staying at my boyfriend's tonight but I don't think we'll do much other than have a good chill together.

    Have a good Wednesday everyone!
