True true and by all accounts its gotten a lot worse.

Given that there are people in this thread telling you otherwise, it can hardly be "by all accounts".
My taste in computers is purely to do with the cost of said computers, and since apple does nothing for me that a cheaper computer can't being a sassy consumer points me away from apple.

Steve Jobs said: "There are some customers which we chose not to serve. We don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk, and our DNA will not let us ship that. But we can continue to deliver greater and greater value to those customers that we choose to serve. And there's a lot of them. We've seen great success by focusing on certain segments of the market and not trying to be everything to everybody. So I think you can expect us to stick with that winning strategy and continue to try to add more and more value to those products in those customer bases we choose to serve."

I guess you're one of the customers Apple chooses not to serve.

Here's an article you might find interesting:

Culture of cheap: How discount computers cost the consumer

Has there ever been a market where the drive to compete solely on price has resulted in better products?
Anyway just cos somethings more expensive doesn't mean its better quality

Of course, but better quality items tend to cost more than lower quality ones.

And it cuts both ways; just because something is cheap, it doesn't mean it's good value.
My personal opinion on laptops anyway is I'd rather buy 3 laptops in 9 years at a total cost of under a grand, with the benefits of upgrades in speccs than buy one computer for around a grand that is to last me 9 years.

    Well that's fair enough.

I use my computer a lot, and my personal opinion is that life is too short to use a cheap junky one. You're a long time dead, and I can't see myself lying on my deathbed thinking "thank goodness I bought all those cheap computers". As the saying goes, you can't take it with you.

I use my computer more than I use my TV, so it would be strange if I had a £1,000 TV and a £400 computer.

Funny thing is the cheapest MP3 player in Argos will do the same job as the "iPod"

It's conspicuous consumerism with the branding of Apple, and thats really what your paying for... And thats a shame, because my iPod player sit's in my pocket most of the day.

You don't think an iPod might be built a bit better than a £9.79 Reddmango 1 GB mp3 player? You don't think it could hold more songs? You don't think its designed better?

For what its worth, it costs Apple more to buy the materials to make an iPod Shuffle than that mp3 player costs to buy retail.

Who the f*ck would want an i-pod shuffle? No-one with half a brain.

It is possible that the iPod is built a bit better than the Reddmango, after a year of use with the Reddmango the case might fall off... but thats worth it because it only cost me £9.79 and I can go and buy another (or if i lose it ect).

Size (GB) is really Apple's selling point, I mean 32GB is massive and again people thing bigger is better but your not really going to listen to 32GB's of music on the way to college.

For me, I just don't need the quality (and i guess price does put it it out the range anyway) or the huge memory because I'm liable to lose it or drop it and I'd hate to drop an iPod

I would like something with a screen and an FM radio and 2GB but because Sony sell them they cost more than I'm willing to pay, and you can tell this conspicuous consumerism works because Sony think it's better to have a bigger Sony logo where the screen should be. Instead we get a really tiny screen and a huge logo, and if they've done that then you cant say it's well built. (thats where I was coming from lol :p)

That explains why you don't want one then. ;)

I can understand that; there's no rule that says everyone must want an iPod.

Google tends to agree with me, besides of course you and other fanboys (fanatics) like you would say its perfect. Fanatics ignore evidence that doesn't agree with what they believe.

Good for Stevie boy way to justify extortionate prices. Oh and I'll think you'll find that its the other way around, I choose not to be ripped off by apple, they've never had the chance to serve me.

Nice bit of cherry picking which all journalists do. Even uses the old "You get what you pay for" saying. If that was true my OS doesn't exist, cos I didn't get anything cos I didn't pay for it. Currently posting with the power of my mind.
Has there ever been a market where the drive to compete solely on price has resulted in better products?

    AMD/Intel? Nvidia/ATI?

And some times the "better quality" items arent worth the price they want you to pay for them. If it can do the job that I need it to do cheaper its go value. I remember walking through the hills/mountain of peru in a pair of Primark Flip Flop (£3) because a pair of walking boots had cut my feet up (£175).
    Well that's fair enough.

I use my computer a lot, I watch all my fav tv series on it, outputs to HD too. It was cheap, but doesn't mean it was junky. Not sure what you're getting at with deathbeds, me being dead, etc, I can guarantee I'll not be thinking FA to do with computers on my deathbed?? No sure what that has to do with anything.

With my Sony and Samsung (both of which were cheaper than an i-pod, and offer way more codec support) I don't need i-tunes or any other 'music management' software.

People on audiophile forums don't listen to i-pods. I'm not saying they all have Clips, Sonys, Samsungs, Cowons, iRivers, but none of them takes i-pods even remotely seriously.

They're for idiots and fanboys who don't mind paying extra for processed rubbish.

I'm sure Google uses iTunes a lot. What sort of music does Google like?

I always imagined it being an adult contemporary acoustic singer/songwriter sort of search engine.
besides of course you and other fanboys (fanatics) like you would say its perfect. Fanatics ignore evidence that doesn't agree with what they believe.

What "evidence" are you talking about?

Please enlighten me as to why I shouldn't like iTunes, Mr "I've-never-used-it-but-some-people-on-Google-don't-like-it-so-I-don't".

If you didn't understand the article the first time, read it again. Don't worry, it's free.

Free products, such as Linux, are not beholden to market forces. They don't have to make money in order to survive.
    AMD/Intel? Nvidia/ATI?

They're in a ruthless price war where the drive to cut prices while still maintaining a profit margin forces them to use ever cheaper components?

And some times the "better quality" items arent worth the price they want you to pay for them. If it can do the job that I need it to do cheaper its go value. I remember walking through the hills/mountain of peru in a pair of Primark Flip Flop (£3) because a pair of walking boots had cut my feet up (£175).

And if the flip-flops had cost more than the walking boots, would it have been worthwhile paying extra for them?

Or would you have said they were extortionately priced, and suffered in your hiking boots for the duration of your holiday?

Because I've never used a cheap computer that wasn't annoying. Life is too short for me to be annoyed every day in an effort to save something so ultimately worthless as money. My happiness is more important.

I have to ask, is that your own opinion, or the general opinion of the People on audiophile?
