  • I understand, I have curved units too! There are loads of them on sale there, that's why I posted the link.

They're all trying to up their profit margins in the recession. What about homebase, their sale ends Tuesday? (though no doubt followed by another one in the not too distant future).

Good morning: Umbermaster is a great place to get ideas but as far as value for money, it is tough to beat IKEA...many fans on here (and detractors as well)..a search on the forum will reveal all;) We've fit several IKEA kitchens over the years.

I posted on your other thread re: architect in Thanet...don't think you need an architect for the proposed kitchen works..perhaps a multi-tradesperson instead.

Regardless, lots of info on building projects on the Planning Portal to get you started.

well I'll tell you the reason why, its not just a new kitchen we need, the kitchen was turned into a kitchen diner, i think the original size of the kitchenmust have been about 10 x 7 which sounds reasonable enough, however, at one end of the kitchen on the corner, is a door that leads thru to this utility room thing. now, i want to close off that door and move the door somewhere else in the house, OR extend the kitchen out into the utility room, putting another door halfway in the utitlity room so that its cut off from the 'kitchen'.
now problem is that there are electrics and or a drain in the way of proposed ideas and the floor to the utility room is a big drop from the floor in the kitchen so there would be a step half way in the kitchen if we extend into the utility room. we have tried discussing it ourselves with drawings but really dont have a clue about whats possible, what doors can go where etc etc. my plan was to have the door to it moved into the hallway, under the stairs, but this would mean a lower door than normal and a step down to the door in the hall, not ideal plus i would need to ahve the electric meter moved, i am reliably informed that southern electrics will charge me an arm and a leg for this....

...when Sarah Beeny baby describes these "room re-assignments" on tv, it all sounds so straightforward.

oh tell me about it, and all the property programmes where you buy a house that you can 'easily extend' or knock thru this and that. for example, we need a loft ladder, a simple addition you might think, but no, because the way our loft hatch is situated means that we can only widen the hatch very slightly in a particular direction which means we can only have a certain type of loft ladder and even then its really tight. so you might say, move the loft hatch to another room..... but we are told that our ceilings are lathe and plaster and it will be a 'lot of work' and v messy too, they cant guarentee that during the work the whole ceiling wont fall in........

Ermm, nothing yet - we haven't quite paid, web site says 4-6 weeks for delivery. Want quote from builder before I commit, and he's dragging his feet. They'd put the flat-packs together in about an hour, in fact anyone could do it before they set to work on the trickier stuff.

when i bought my first home, a flat, 12 years ago (just moved out of it) it needed a new kitchen, i got the work tops from ikea, lovely, and the kitchen from b and q. i hadnt actually moved in to the property at that point because so much needed doing, plumbing, electrics and of course the kitchen, there wasnt really one there. so i was given a date for delivery, it was 8am to 8pm (of course). as i had no furniture there (wooden floors too) i took a chair with me, sat on that bluddy chair for 12 hours, with a book that i finished, had bottled water with me and my mobile. NO KITCHEN ARRIVED. i was fuming

That's it - I want to see a REALISTIC home improvement programme where these problems happen, not one where the builders are cheap (cos they get free tv advertising), client funds are endless etc etc
