They are quoting you full price. We got quoted £190 for a replacement door when ours broke. We got builder to buy it (same door was £40 for him).

You need to get the quote via someone who has a trade account there.
6k bill will probably fall below 2k.

    Cheers

This is so true. I was given a quote by B&Q of £5500 for a small kitchen like OP's and remembered a local carpenter I'd used to fix my front door. I phoned him and asked if he fitted kitchens which he did. He supplied and fitted includung plumbing (no appliances) for £1,800. So if someone can suggest a good local carpenter that's the way to go.
    It's someone else's fault.

Hi dodger, so your carpenter fitted the same kitchen that you wanted in B and Q for 5k, for 1800 or did he make one himself for 1800??

i have just asked about architects because our kitchen in our new home is rubbish, didnt even think about it when we viewed but there is virtually no worktop space and we cant fit a fridge freezer in, so need a redesign and a new kitchen as units will have to be moved around i think, am dreading the cost of it all, need to build into what is called a 'utility room' but which is just a shack sort of thing. i dont know where to start with how to find what kitchen is right at the CHEAPEST price poss...

Jenner, Have you tried Umbermaster on pysons road ind. estate. Probably too expensive (didn't try myself and wish i had!). Our own kitchen was designed by wickes but save money and get someone else to install it. Happy enough with the wickes units/doors/drawers etc.

Good morning: Umbermaster is a great place to get ideas but as far as value for money, it is tough to beat IKEA...many fans on here (and detractors as well)..a search on the forum will reveal all;) We've fit several IKEA kitchens over the years.

I posted on your other thread re: architect in Thanet...don't think you need an architect for the proposed kitchen works..perhaps a multi-tradesperson instead.

Regardless, lots of info on building projects on the Planning Portal to get you started.

Slight update from me (OP) on my kitchen - it's 12 x 6 1/4 (not 9 x 7). Still small and £6000 still loadsamoney for just materials.

Hi jenner, he supplied from Wicks but the quality was the same.

    STOP-PRESS UPDATE

We got the (virtually) same kitchen quoted from Homebase for £4600 (includes cooker, sink, cabinets, worktops, everything we need apart from - gulp - fitting). I know this will still sound expensive to a lot of you, but it's all my negotiating skills can bear and we're going for it. And remember, we're in rip-off London. Their "half-price" deal expires Saturday (unsurprisingly).

Gave Howdens a chance to respond, but no luck - he just rubbished homebase a bit (though initially slipped up by saying they are fine) and didn't even enquire what the quote was. Recession can't be hitting them too badly then?

my kitchens 10 ft 10 inches by 7ft 6 inches
and I will be doing mine in the near future.
because the plumming needs replacing I
had it in mind to get the plummer in and
get him to sort out plumming and as a
temp fix until I make up my mind to fit
a new sink base and use my sink. So I
can look into the cost better and not
    be rushed.
I asked in Howdens how much for a
flat pack sink base, without doors the
    cost £26 + vat.
