That's brilliant about the landlady! Well done you for sticking with it and not giving up! Just goes to show she obviously thought you were bluffing and would go away if ignored!

I've read through this thread this evening and I'm totally inspired by you all. I've got a fuzzy warm glow :T

I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like to have so little pennies to last 2 weeks. I've been very very lucky, I know.

Keep going and well done for getting this far:j
Debts (incl Mortgage) at LBM (24/09/08) £102849  Now £0. DFD 1st July 2019
  • The obvious answer is a DSS Crisis Loan. Available to everyone, not just the unemployed. Freephone number.

Basically, they will help. You say your electric and gas are on a pre paid key card thing (or they won't include help for that) and they will easily (unless you are a right muppet and balls it up) advance the equivalent of your DSS daily rates until you next get paid. No evidence usually needed.

So, if you are single and over 21 you would get £64.30 a week income support or JSA so that is about £9.18 a day. If you had 15 more days until payday, then you could get 15*9.18=137.7. You would pay it back at some agreed figure per week, starting way way way into the future if their processing skills are the same as they used to be.

Sure it is more debt but you can't live on £3.

But she did!!! Well done BIW in getting the LL to cough up - see, I always say nagging gets results :rotfl:

  • Sure it is more debt but you can't live on £3.

    I did though!

True, it wasn't exactly the most fun ever, and I doubt I could do it for very long. Buttt - I think one of the upshots was that I showed myself (and maybe some other people) that it's possible to survive on a lot less than you think. And that's helpful when you're trying to get out of debt and thinking "oh gawd I've got so much I need to spend money on!" .

Although I don't believe I was exactly a spendthrift before this happened - I have learned how little one can live on if you really do strip it back to the bare minimum. Although now I can make room for a few treats (I'd go crazy if I didn't) and eat a bit more (!) I am far more aware of my cash. I've also discovered a few helpful ideas through necessity which I'm continuing to make use of (using 9p noodles for emergency lunches for example, or buying cheap bar soap instead of shower gel).

I really hope this has been helpful to others too. Whether you are really struggling, or could just do with saving a few extra pennies.

    SOOOOOOOO my news is....

I have managed to get some of the money from my landlady - she has sent me a cheque for £800, which is most of what she owes. In the accompanying letter she says that she is retaining £200 for "cleaning and repairs" - no more detail. As we've already established that she didn't protect my deposit, I'm certain she's not entitled to do this (the flat was in a very reasonable condition when I left anyway.). So - any suggestions on whether it's worth pursuing the rest?

The £800 I have been paid will pay off just under half of my debt - fabulous! Although I'm also going to have to use some of it for a new pair of shoes as mine have holes in the soles! And maybe £10 to take bf for a couple of pints.
  • that is great news - personally iwould still chase her for the £200 - what have you got to loose! if she didnt lock your deposit away then fight for it!

your thread has been inspirational - made my OH read it to show that we arnt that broke! lol - hope youre not offended by that!

good luck with getting back on your feet :)
