Ice tea is a really nice drink and its really cheap. Boil about 500 mls of water, pour in a jug, add tea bag, let it hackle, add sugar to taste, add 500 mls of cold water, chuck in fridge or other cool place. 1 hr later Ice tea :)

    cheers :D:D:beer:

    Hi BiW,

I don't know how you will feel about this but I will suggest it. Supermarkets throw out food that is either past its sell by dates or in damaged packaging. Some people have lived on the food for years. I think Jonathan Maitland from Watchdog did an experiment where he lived on it for a fortnight.

The groups who do this are called freegans and there are people you will be able to contact on their website to give you some tips (You'll have to google it as I'm not allowed to put the website address in!) Supermarkets like to keep this very quiet.

I feel like bringing you a food parcel round.

I'm getting a little frustrated right now. As mentioned before, I don't have many friends locally, so I'm kind of eager to take up any social invitations. Unfortunately, half the time I can't afford to!

    Hello BiW,

just read/skimmed the whole thread. Well done - I think you've come a long way in a short span of time!

A social suggestion for you - have you heard of Morsbags? It's a grassroots effort to get people to take reusable bags when they go shopping by sewing them (usually with donated/ charity shop fabric) and giving them away. There are "pods" all over the country and the world. There's bound to be one near you. think of the benefits: You get to practice your sewing
You get to meet new people
You get to do something good for the environment

another idea for going out on the cheap - mystery shopping. It may not be ideal in your situation, in that you have to pay upfront, then get reimbursed. My husband is signed up to one of them, so I don't have the details handy, but I can get them for you if your interested. Or I'm sure there's a a thread elsewhere in the forum.
Gratitude turns what we have into enough.
  • Well, I just filled in my first Pinecone survey - I am surprisingly excited about having just been quizzed about my toilet paper purchasing habits (no kidding)!
When passing a phone box, check for any money in the tray.

Seriously, I was doing this with parking meters on my way home from work the other day, and turned around to find a group of teenage girls sniggering at me! Best not to do it at school kicking out time I guess....

Amazing! I am so pleased I managed to (inadvertantly in a way) start a thread that other people have found helpful and inspirational. Obviously it's not my doing, so much as the lovely, lovely people who've contributed - but it still feels good to have kickstarted something positive.

I'll look into Morsbags. The first couple of things I've made have been (slightly wonkily seamed) totebags in fact. I have shedloads of designs for more in my head.

I've also just started serious lurking on the Old Style board by the way. Anyone who hasn't I really heavily suggest you check it out - some awesome ideas on there!
  • glad you're doing ok now hun, the helpfulness of others on here is truely inspirational
  • I didnt' have time to read all but how did BiW manage? by the way in my local Asda, I've had food given away to me for free (fruit, yoghurts, etcc..) I didn't read all but if you know it's going to be a tight month (mine usually every month) by cheap loafs of bread and break them up into seperate bags and freeze them at least you don't need to defrost a whole loaf for one sandwich.

I work 1 hours travel from my house so when it gets so bad I simply feign illness or usually just use my holiday entitlement, if i was female I think i'd plan a fake pregnancy for the break!!

At end of the day, if it gets so bad, you can always see your local GP because being stressed like this is no good and you could get some time of work on sick leave, gives you time to think whch I know could be bad, but also gives you the opportunity to save on expenses such as travel etc.. but you can use your time more proactively to speak to charities etc.. until you feel better.
  • also, not really saving money but as I catch 2 trains to work every day (and 2 back!!), this is what I do... train fare is £6 return or £4 single, if for any reason no collectors come around on morning journey, I've saved at least £2, I put that away and do not touch unless no other option, there's been days where i'v enot paid for same reason so saved £6. When I've had to pay on my return journey, I'm not proud but I lie on where I've got on, (this only works for non-barrier stops obv) but I'll say I got on a 2 stops earlier or something...

last month we were broke as usual as it was a week till payday and I'd raided my secret train travel money supply to find I'd saved £70..... if you got the will power do this! this wa safter I'd exhausted all money vouchers and other forms of cost cutting (makin gstews for food etc..) the noodles trick and buying food late from supermarkets and visiting family. that £70 got us to payday (with the help of a day off work at the end!!)

I'm not preaching and I appreciate times might be tough, but I'm not sure that lying and cheating is the way forward. For your own good I would reconsider these options, life without a job and a criminal record could be alot tougher.
