Hello there, I'm a lurker on the daily, too lazy to say hi, really, but just wanted to say that I'm glad everything went Ok for you FE. I only popped my head in just now while I'm waiting for the oven to finish off, and as I hadn't come across any of your posts in the last few days, I wanted to check if you'd been about and if everything was OK. Just realised that makes me sound like a mad stalker, which I'm not by the way!!!
Hi to everyone else!

Hi everyone,
Well the best laid plans and all that. Got a phone call from middle bro at 3am on Sunday to say mum was being rushed into hospital, so I had to drop everything and come up to Lancs to look after dad. He's still far from well after coming out of hospital and its taxing all my ingenuity getting him to eat. The trouble is that he doesn't feel hungry and has been plagued with stomach acid etc which has put him off eating even more. He is also a very conservative eater at the best of times (no pasta, rice, spicy food etc). It's very difficult.
I'm also feeling a bit sorry for myself because it's our 30th anniversary today and we were going out to a posh restaurant to celebrate, so that's off now. DH told me to expect a delivery but nothing's come as yet so that's left me a bit flat as well.
Oh well, plenty worse off than me - must go and peg out the sheets.
See you later.0 -
Agree 100% about the fruit trees as long as they aren't too close to roads. There is a town not far from me that is planting trees etc. on any available land http://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/ .
With regards to the 5 lb chickens - great economy. My Grandma always bought the largest chickens because she said they were much better valueand she used to make up little portions of roast dinner and freeze them for our midweek lunches! Roast dinner is one of my ultimate comfort foods!0 -
Thriftlady,
I'm with you on the trees, unfortunately not only do people complain about slipping on the fruit the local yobs use them as missiles.
Working for a local council you get all sorts of complaints about trees, someone rang me once to complain that a lovely maple on council land was shedding its leaves into their garden so could we have it chopped down!!!
I would love to turn available land over to veg but we've been looking for new allotment land for ages without success (its allotment week this week). There are about sixty people on our waiting list.0 -

Hi
Just wanted to drop in and say hello. I've been skimming the daily threads but haven't posted for a while. Life has been a bit manic at work with just four of us doing the work of seven! So, still not much OS going on but OH & DDs have been helping more with shopping, cooking, gardening etc. We're also reaping the benefits of batch cooking and freezing as most of our dinners lately are from this.
The garden is sprouting a forest of weeds, but the tomatoes are doing well despite being watered at odd times (usually when I see them wilting
) and we're getting a good crop of onions and runner beans.
Have downloaded the Economy Gastronomy prog and hope to watch it later.
Have a good evening all, ((((((hugs)))))) to those in need.

Thanks for the good wishes for my aged collie...nearly took him to the vet's today, but neither DH nor I really wanted to, so he's reprieved for another day. Just wish I could feel convinced that we're keeping him for him rather than because we don't want to lose him (if that makes sense!).Resolution:

Where are you, patchwork cat? Todmorden isn't that far from me either & I was lucky enough to attend a meeting in my town where the ladies from Incredible Edible Todmorden came to talk to us. What enthusaism! :rotfl:I think the idea is spreading slowly. I managed to grow a few spuds in some tubs this year & have been so inspired to try a bit harder next year!
There's also a derelict farm near me that some local groups are trying to buy/lease & turn into some sort of community farm/food project, which sounds very promising. It'd be nice if we could have it working like that, just to help locals get to grips with growing a few things themselves.
