Smoky - children can do that! My DGS now and again has a good throwing-up session and is as right as rain afterwards. I hope yours is well and truly better now. Don't forget neat alcohol (vodka, gin or something like that) will get rid of any 'sick' stains and smells!
Pippa - we sometimes see little caravan thingies on the backs of motorbikes, and mini trailer tents! Hope the weather brightens up for you.

Good morning everyone:hello:
I've been having a very quiet few days (since last Tuesday) when my husband took the kids camping. They'll be back on Thursday.
I've been a bit bored to be honest. Much as I like having my days to myself when they're all at work/school, having the evenings to myself as well is a bit too much. There's a big chunk of time from about 4 till 8 when I'm at a loose end.
Anyway I've been doing my usual OS stuff. I've made a batch of white bread and I'm going to make a batch of granary and one of wholemeal today. The freezer will be well-stocked with bread for a couple of weeks at least. It seems I don't eat much bread when I'm on my own. I had to breadcrumb the end of a loaf the other day.
I went to the butcher last week and picked up a freezer order of 8 free range chickens (special offer of buy 6 get 2 free), a pack made up of 2lb diced braising steak, 3lb minced beef and 2lb minced lamb and a pack made up of 2lb minced beef, 3lb sausages, 2lb gammon steaks, 2lb diced lamb and 2lb diced pork. That lot cost £115 -not sure whether everyone will agree that is a good price or not. It works out at about £1.90 per lb of meat. My empty freezer is full again and that makes me happy:j
I've also used up the blackcurrants that were in the freezer to make 6 pots of very sucessful jam.
My blackberries are ripening. I've picked a few and frozen them, must see if there are any more today.
The crab apples are ready to pick too. I've bought lots of sugar this week so that I can make crab apple jelly. I'm hoping to buy a box of damsons in the next couple of weeks for damson gin and chutney. I'm too lazy to go foraging:o
I shall be making a batch of yogurt today.
The washing machine has been strangely quiet this week, but it won't know what's hit it when they all come back from camp with their dirty washing:eek:. The bathroom and loo have stayed immaculate all week too:rolleyes: I've hoovered once since Tuesday instead of once a day.0 -
Taplady - my only tip for mac cheese is to put a bit of Dijon mustard in the cheese sauce for extra flavour - but then again that's not something limited to mac cheese!!!I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

Also I love mac and cheese with extra cheese on top and popped in the oven for a bit, but then I love toasted cheese!
Sorry haven't caught up but hugs for all that need them and congrats to all who deserve.
Thriftlady how much was all the freezer goodies? I really miss a proper butcher, used to always go to Dewhursts. We do have butchers locally, but they never seem to have much in and prices are not competitive -we do have a farmshop a couple of miles away that is good.
The kids seem to fight all the time atm! It drives me mad - had planned to do a lot more this hols, but am really not up to it. Anyone watching the meteor shower tonight if it is cloud free?0 -

I usually put english mustard in cheese sauce - is there much difference between the two?Do what you love :happyhear0 -
£115 -good value rather than dirt cheap;) The chickens are about 5lb each- so 58lb meat altogether.patchwork_cat wrote: »

Morning all

Bit of a late start for me today, just can't seem to get motivated, need to do washing but the skies are grey and rain is forecast, wanted to wash the lace curtains as well as they look yucky! The council are in our street this morning chopping down two lovely weeping willow trees which they have declared unsafe and out growing the place, total rubbish! They just don't like having to come around once a year to cut back the branches that overhang the road.
They're going to replace them with two new trees more suitable although they haven't told us what, bet it won't be apple trees or something remotely useful! Can't believe how miserable losing these lovely trees has made me feel. We only got the letter on Saturday to tell us it was happening, couldn't get through to the number for enquiries on it yesterday to voice my concern, not that it would have made much difference. So now instead of the lovely tree filled island the view from my window will be a big iron gate and brick wall. I loved listening to them rustle on breezey nights and they looked so lovely and graceful and what will the little squirrels that traverse the concrete jungle scramble up now?
Sorry to moan, it just feels so wrong and I can't do anything about it, I know lots of you have far weightier concerns and problems so forgive the wibble, just needed to share.
