I didn't direct my comment at any particular poster but as you've seen fit to suggest that you download an average of 4GB a day of all perfectly street legal material I'll just say that you must be kept very busy installing all these "trial" programs.

The only way I could manage to consume that volume would be if it were mostly video and even then 4GB would be more divx movies than I'd have time to watch.

Please note that I'm making no judgements and really don't care what you download but will say that those sort of volumes are only possible on cable and LLU ADSL so consider yourself lucky and don't be surprised if you sometimes suffer throttling.

I'm not sure I could even find anywhere near that amount of stuff to legally download for free, never mind just stuff I'd want. Not saying anything illegal going on but I agree that it'd have to be loads of movies (which aren't free anyway) or something as the only apps given as examples only amount to mere MiBs anyway. I mean news servers aren't exactly known for supplying legal file downloads.

Why not? It quite clearly is. We all know it. People will be downloading either p0rn, music, or movies. Throw in a few PC games and bang! 10GB. Right there.:rotfl:

For anyone experiencing similar issues I've now resolved this by giving Virgin Media a call (01642 191401 thanks to saynoto0870.com), asked to be transferred to the Broadband department, they then did some checks, confirmed there was a problem, fixed it (he said he re-added the modem back to our package) and speed have gone from 2000kbps to 9700kbps

Even then I find it amazing to be downloading so much. I stream quite a bit of music but probably my biggest download use is games which can take quite a few GiBs but even then I'm not sure why you'd be downloading every single thing you can think of. I'm not saying necessarily illegal because I sometimes have the odd day or two in a month where a may be downloading multiple GiBs worth and I don't download anything illegally. So I could occasionally hit 10 GiB but that's over a few days and it's not all the time, just on very rare occasion.

Can I ask a very stupid question ? I just use my pc mostly for ebay/email/facebook etc i don't download movies or anything like that? Is that classed as downloading still? sorry probably a very stupid question!? lol
I rang virgin media today for my dad and they said sites like speedtest are rubbish and they don't care what the results say, he got me to go to a site and download two gamefiles and keep giving him the speed of the downloads and said for eg 512 and 578 adds upto the 10mbs because for every meg there is 120 kbs or something, is this right? he was quite condesending and i didn't wnt to ask anymore questions lol

Broadband speed is measured in megabits per second, commonly written as Mb or Mbps e.g. 10Mb, or 10Mbps.

Make sure you don't get confused between megabits and megabytes (which tends to be written as MB)

In summary, there are eight bits in a byte, so, if your download speed is 8 megabits per second (8Mb), then that's actually shifting 1 megabyte per second (1MB) e.g. 8Mb divided by 8bits = 1MB

You may also come across Kb and KB - kilobits and kilobytes - there are 1,024KB in a MB, and 1,024MB in a GB

When you connect to the internet, the download speed is the pace at which data (websites, programmes, music etc) is transferred from another computer to yours.

I always use www.speedtest.net to check on my speed, usually throughout the day


You should be getting speeds like this, always choose the closest server to you.

You will never get it dead on. so this is acceptable. See above. if on the other hand you are getting results like this one below, please note the day and time. top right. \/
Then i would say not acceptable unless you are a heavy downloader. and it means they are throttling you.

Hi Andy, I've just done the speedtest test and got download 3.90mbps , upload 0.45mb/s and ping 125ms, this is typical no matter what time of day i test, I have never had more than 4.52 mbps download speed, when I rang virgin on my dads behalf ( as we get very similar speeds) they said he was getting more than this, the full 10mbps , as i said in the above post he was nice but quite condescending, and totally rubbished the speedtest.net etc. what can I do? He totally bamboozled me with downloading files and adding the two download speeds so i didn't in the end know actually what he meant, Like I said at the start of this post my dads friend is always 8mbps and above, even on speed test etc
