Virgin BB upto 10meg, but isn't??

Options
Hi,

I've quite recently been upgraded to 10meg from Virgin, but I'm lucky to hit a four, is this right? My Dad who lives about 12 streets away also can't get over 4, but his friend is constantly on an 8. Is it our pc's or virgin?surely if your promised up to 10, to me I'd expect at least a 7??

Thanks

Nope, if you're promised up to 10 you get... anywhere up to ten heh.

Does anyone else on your road have Virgin that you could ask?

If it's running through your telephone line, maximum broadband speed is almost entirely dependent on the distance of your property from the exchange. I would imagine your dad's friend lives significantly closer to his local exchange than you do.

You could be the unlucky one and be in one of Virgin's dark areas

    LOL :D
It is possible to get Virgin through a phone line if you're not in a cabled area though.

Yes, it is, but the OP is talking about cable services as they have just received an upgrade to 10mb.

Unless you have received a letter through the door saying it's happening then the upgrade might not have happened yet. I have been promised by the end of August so I am waiting to see what they bring me. Still stuck on 2mb here atm :(

I would phone them and ask them why you are getting poor speed. Best way to measure is by using:

    http://www.speedtest.net

Also, are you plugging your modem in through to your PC directly or is it running through a wireless router? Are you on a wired/wireless connection?

Are you using the Modem-->USB2-->PC connection? If so that will slow you down too!

    Just some thoughts!

I applied for the upgrade via the website at the start of May, at that time this area wasn't even on the schedule.

I received the speed increase within 48 hrs.

A month later I received an email telling me my speed had been increased.

However I will probably be leaving as I am sick of their random billing, I'm supposed to be paying £8.16/mth, but it can be anything up to £17/mth, never get 2 months the same.

I have to phone retentions to get the amount corrected, (they do sort it, and are usually very good about it), all because the normal billing department cannot adjust a 'manually' applied discount.

    Feel better now.
