The wireless router could be an issue. As you're 150m from the Derry server I'll assume you're not in NI. My results right now on the Lisburn NI exchange are:



I am hardwired to my wireless router ATM, but regularly get speeds of 12Mb plus. I'm a bit closer, but that shouldn't make any difference (except to ping times). If you are wireless, you should plug in to the router and run the test againm. that will confirm if the problem is the wireless.

OK davidmt83, so dumeter says i've downloaded/uploaded more than i actually have, but i dont have a router, i just have the computer connected to the modem to the internet connection. Also if you actually click on the link to the forum which is on the link you posted, where people are discussing DUmeter, some are saying that its actually correct, it may not be perfect, ie 100% accurate but its only a guide as to your usage.
also note when you download a file you are also uploading data at the same time. even if your not personally uploading a file, data is being sent from your computer to the place your downloading the file, i guess to get information on time, speed etc.

according to the page custardy posted the best time to download would be from 9pm to 10am during the night, and doing the light downloading through the day 10am-9pm.
But as alienrik correctly pointed out, the capping never works out like that, i personally have watched my speed increase after 1am when i thought it was suppost to be 12am, so they where obviously capping / throtteling me until 1am.

But shouldnt this be discussed on it own post instead of someone elses about their problem ??

Well that's something that should be eliminated from your tests if you want to discuss the speed of the ISP connection itself. Plug computer into modem directly and test perhaps.

I pay for "up to 20Mb" and I get this (below) which I'm fairly happy with. Due to the way computer networks work, you'll never see the exact numbers from a test website that you're paying for because of the way the web and networking in general behave.

Aside from when im throttled I tend to get exactly 10 Meg which is what I pay for. Im suprised at all the various speeds others get through Virgin.

At uni house. 20mb I ask, 19mb I get. Very happy about that.

Home, 20mb I ask... get 7.73mb atm....

Different routers which I think could be the problem. However my laptop is G, the routers are N1 Draft and G, so it shouldn't really make a difference But I think the router at home has got problems as it limited my downloads on torrents.... whereas my N1 Draft doesn't.

Indeed, routers can be an issue which is why Virgin insist on supplying a brand new router with their 50Mb service. When I upgraded to 50Mbit, I tried using my "old" Netgear router and it would not get above 13Mbits. A direct connection to the modem maxed out at v close to 50Mb and when I am connected to my new router via an ethernet cable I get anywhere betwenn 20 & 50Mbits, but never more than 35 via a Wireless-N connection

Netmeter is the freeware program.

I suspect that to someone downloading 10GB a day on a regular basis everything is "freeware" and that the definition of "shareware" is being able to find somebody to share it.

I'm a heavy downloader and user of newsgroups and found that during peak times I was luck to get 1mb speed. During off peak times, i.e. after 11pm it would be back up to the max of 8mb. I am a heavy user so understood why Virgin did it. I'm now with o2 and though i download just as much i'm not being throttled at peak times and the connection is more reliable.

I dont download 10gb per day, average is nearer 4gb, its just some days i do download more, if you take the total amount downloaded over 1month and divide that by the number of days you'll see its less than 10gb.
average number of days to a month 31, so i should be doing 310gb, well the most in 1 month was 248gb, all the rest below 150gb, which works out at 4.8gb per day, but then 150gb was also 2nd highest. 64gb was my lowest, after the free 10mb upgrade which only works out at just over 2gb per day.
Most of my downloading is done thought virgins news servers. I dont use torrent very much, and everything is free, it is free to download and install it, even trialware / shareware where after 30 days you can either buy it or uninstall it, I also download freeware programs aswell, Ccleaner, malwarebytes, defraggers, registy cleaners <bad i know, packers/archivers to see if the features have improved.
