Virgin BB upto 10meg, but isn't??

If you got to a shop and pay for 1Kg of apples and they give you 500gm you could complain to trading standards and get the vendor fined. For some strange reason this doesn't apply to sellers of broadband who can (and do) get away with advertising one thing and delivering less.

Hiya thank you for the helpful answers, I have a wired network but mine is the main connection (my dad has no networks at all) I tested through speedtest.net and have never gotten above 4, no matter what time of day. I had a letter from virgin saying i had been upgraded about 4 weeks or more ago, i think i will give them a ring, i have tried unplugging my sons and testing at various times but it makes no difference, and kwikbreaks i have to agree, i was told by virgin they were putting the price up, but for this i would be getting upto 10 meg, but 4 to me isn't up to 10, more 5

Interesting topic. I logged onto Virgin's web site a while back, requested the free upgrade and was happy one day to notice rapid downloads. ~1 month later and for some unknown reason the speeds have gone from ~9.5 Mb/s to ~2 Mb/s.

I've checked the web site and it still says: Broadband package:10Mb M

If anyone gets through to someone useful on the phone could you please post the number? Thanks

A shop doesn't sell 'upto 1kg' for a fixed amount though does it?

But the ads say up to 10 mb so it can be anything up to 10mb

Even when you do manage to get your 10Meg sorted, wait til you start using it!!



Give it 20 minutes of downloading and that will drop to less than 5Mb/s

No they don't for the very good reason that trading standards wouldn't let them.

On ADSL there is at least the excuse that the maximum speed is dictated by the physics of the phone line but the only limiting factor with cable is the contention ratio and most reasonable people would expect to get somewhere close to the advertised maximum.

The problem is that ISPs advertise and people buy based on headline speeds but for the most part that isn't where the true cost of providing the service lies - it is in the bandwidth consumed and providing the advertised speeds at peak times would be prohibitively expensive so it simply isn't done.

Sounds to me like your ON 4 meg. Virgin are notorious for getting things wrong. Give them a phone and get them to check the speed

As previous people have said Virgin Media Throttle there users, I have been upgraded to their 10mb service, but through the day my speed drops down to 2mb speeds, they have classed me as a HEAVY user, I can see there point, I do use utorrent, but mostly I download through there own newserver, I have a program to examine how much i download through the days, months etc, depending on whats on there news servers depends on how much i download. so some days i download upto 10gb, other days less than 1gb, average i would say 4gb or less per day.
Checking on speednet will give you ideas on the speed, you could also send them links to the information, given the date and time, and ask why you not getting the 10mb <note 10megabits not megabytes, divide by 8 to get the file download speed in kilobytes, speed also depends on where your downloading from and where your located in the country.
From there newservers i get 2 - 10mb depending on time of day.
I would still get them to check your line.
