I would do the same in your position. Overpaying a mortgage gives far more long-term benefits!

Orange have offered me the following to stay with them:
HTC Hero for £166.00
400 mins
unlimited texts
unlimited data
Still keep magic numbers
all for £19.57 a month

18 month deal.0

Works out approx. £100 cheaper if I stick with Orange over the 18 months and have the bonus of unlimited texts. Why is it awful?0

That works out at about 29 quid a month for the 18 months. T-Mobile offer the Hero free on contract for 36.50 with 800 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited net for new customers. Orange retentions should be able to do a lot better.
Also, keep in mind, they say "unlimited net" but chances are they mean 500mb. Also, if you go over you just pay for the excess, so in that respect it's really not unlimited by any stretch of the imagination. T-Mobile's unlimited net however is a 3gb (3072mb) limit, and if you breach that they contact you to let you know rather than simply charging you. Certainly worth considering, but that deal they've offered you is really not anything special. I'd recommend contacting retentions and playing a bit of hardball

The Orange deal is still cheaper than the T-mobile deal you are quoting. £36.50X18=£657
£166+(18*19.57)=£518.26
This is based on me staying on the same tariff with T-mobile.
Thats a £138.74 saving by sticking with Orange?
Not bothered about the internet, hardly use it on the phone anyway. The biggest issue was the texts - I use more than 500 a month easily.
This deal was offered to me through retentions. I tried getting them to lower the cost of the handset or the line rental and they would not budge. I rang up several times to try my luck with other retention operators but it never worked.0 -
T-Mobile is a bit more expensive, that's true. However, you're getting 800 minutes rather than 400 and a much better internet package. Granted, you may not be so concerned about that but keep in mind this is for new customers on T-Mobile and given that you're going through retentions, I can't help but feel they should be working a little harder to keep your custom.
I think it'd be worth telling retentions about that T-Mobile offer and try to convince them that it's a significantly better offer despite being for new customers only and see if they can do better.0 -
My contract originally had 600 minutes - I asked them to reduce it to 400 to make it a bit easier for them to offer me the handset at a lower price or reduce my line rental. I use about 200 minutes a month so there is no need for 600 mins.
To be honest, the attitude of the Orange staff where very relaxed to say the least. They didn't seem remotely bothered about losing my custom so because of that I am definately leaving them.
I still have the iPhone but have until tomorrow to return it if I don't want it. I like the handset but the text allowance is killing me.0
