iPhone v HTC Hero Dilemma

Signed up for an iPhone 3GS last Friday and have the current deal:

16gb iPhone 3GS - £184.98

18 month deal at £34.26 per month giving me 600 anytime any network minutes and 500 text messages. Also get unlimited UK data and Wi-Fi

Also had 30% discount knocked off the line rental so line rental is now £23.98.

I currently have an old Orange contract which is due to finish in October. This gives me:

600 anytime any network minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb of internet browsing for £22 per month approximately.

I also have a HTC Hero sim free that I have purchased for £400 with no Orange branded software on it – I originally was going to use this with my Orange sim.

Normally I would calculate the total cost of the O2 package and compare it with the total cost of the Orange package.

Originally when my contract expired with Orange I was going to ask for a substantial reduction in line rental as I did not want a new handset. However I have no idea how much they are prepared to knock off. Can anybody give me an idea of how much they think will be deducted? I anticipated my line rental going down to £12 per month but I am unsure.

I like the iPhone but the HTC is almost as good as the iPhone.

I’m thinking long term costs so presumably Orange will come out the cheapest. Both contracts are similar but obviously one gives me unlimited texts and the other gives me unlimited 3g web browsing and downloads. The texts are an issue as I used to use over 600 texts a month – but I could be disciplined and keep these under 500 if I stick with O2.

I have a 15 day change your mind policy on the iPhone so I can still return it back to the shop – feel a little guilty doing it but well within my rights to do so.

I don’t want to look to get a HTC Hero with Orange when my contract is up for renewal. I’ve just had a nightmare with them whereby they charged me £77.50 for the handset on upgrade and then rang a day later claiming they had made an error and that I should have been charged £160 – so I had to send the handset back! Also, the Orange branded version seemed to run more slowly than the unlocked version.

So….iPhone on O2 or HTC Hero on Orange?

Thanks.

And by the way you can cancel the Orange contract early. Have a look at thread "Orange price changes".

Can you please tell me where did you get that cool deal for Iphone with O2 from? Please?

Yeah, how did you get 30% off the line rental!?

I thought the T&C of the ipod fair deal policy are set up so no discount can be offered on iphone tariffs?

Did you go through Retentions for that?

I can't disclose how I got the discount but I have got it. The salesperson put the discount on my tariff, I rang customer services and they confirmed it has been applied. I also have a text message from O2 saying:

"O2: Great News! Your 30% discount has been applied. You will see this on your next bill. Thank You.

Considering the Hero ... been imagining what it would feel like in my pocket so got a cheap calculator .. you know the ones with slightly angled display ... and turned it upside down and tried that lol !
