although i do undersrtand your frustration but i must add that i used to work in retail and i have see many mother buying booze for their kid as young as ten and when we refusedd ot serve them oh boy the abuse we received wwas unbelievable !
How do you know that?
Its one of those things that are done to "show" how responsible the supermarkets are being over the underage drinking problem we have, but won't actually acheive anything. If parents want to give a minor alcohol it will take more than this to stop them. Ridiculous.0 -
If there is evidence that the alcohol is being bought for a minor, then fair enough.
E.g. in these situations:- Parent with child/minor in alcohol aisle discussing which drink the child would like the parent to buy
- Parent declares to check out operator, "Hmm, I would if a bottle of wine will help my baby sleep tonight?"

If it ever happened to me, I'd just leave all my shopping where it was and would leave the store.
As a customer, I have the right to vote with my feet.
It is insulting to say the least."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

Insulting is the word I was looking for. I bought alcohol with a child in a supermarket today and it never even crossed my mind that they were thinking I would actually give it to them. I would be offended that they were questioning my parenting skills.0 -
You know at the end of the day supermarkets are only after profit. Causing inconvenience to a few customer is better than losing your licence to sell alcohol.
Going back to a point someone else made would you all be getting your knickers in a whizzle if it was cigarettes that was being talked about instead of alcohol?
No, because I don't smoke, so never buy them, so would never be in that situation.;)0 -
Im 21 this year and always get asked for ID usually by people who I went to school with and they are 4 or 5 years younger than me.
Just to be evil when they ask "Have you got ID" just reply "Yes"...... and wait for the long pause.

What is very clear, is that tesco's will lose custom if any parent shopping with a child, can't buy alcohol.
Not serving those who look under 25 is fair enough but not serving a mum or dad with their 8 year old in tow, is just ridiculous!0 -
I just used to get frustrated with Tesco for not serving me alcohol at 03:00. I went shopping because I couldn't sleep and I might as well do something. I thought I'd buy a bottle of something to help get me off to sleep, but they wouldn't serve me. Something to do with licencing hours. I didn't understand. I just thought "how ironic - I'm there because I can't sleep and the one thing that they sell that will get me off to sleep can't be sold on the one rare occassion that I actually do want it!!"
they dont have a license past 11pm to sell alcohol.0 -
The policy clearly is just causing mayhem. Time the onus was moved off the hapless checkout operator and disgruntled (and law abiding) shopper and placed firmly where it belongs - on the parents of the kids getting drunk. Hit them where it hurts - and maybe they will have to forgo their own booze/fags/scratchcards - till the next giro anyway. Oh, did I say that? - how un-pc?0

that part is true and applies to all supermarkets. usually its ropped off and only staff allowed there after 11pm.
they dont have a license past 11pm to sell alcohol.
This cant be true as ive been into Tesco and bought alcohol at 1am and had no problems at all...
Ah I'm sooo looking forward to the weekly shop with my mum this evening, wonder if I'll get asked ID for her buying a bottle of wine for herself....:rolleyes:0
