    Ahem ...

    Passport?
A stolen passport can cost more than the £80 or so to replace it. It can lead to ID fraud...as other posters have commented. I don't drive and have to regularly take my passport with me to agencies to prove I am English. It leads to me feeling very uneasy as if you take my bag with that in it, you take my ID and the possibility of severe consequences for myself..

I was reading this thread and thought I'd check out the whole fake ID thing - not that I need it - LOL haven't been asked in about 20 years:rotfl:
I couldn't believe how many websites do it - like this one - allegedly novelty items - why would anyone need a novelty fake id??

Because people try to buy alcohol underage. I've just had a nosey at that website, there seems a variety of them!

In my job I do ask for ID from you if you are buying alchohol or fags if you look under 21.

This really takes the pee now... I went to Tesco earlier this evening to buy a bottle of wine, took my passport as I always do because more often than not I get IDed. The flipping !!!!!! who served me refused to accept my ID for the most ridiculous reason I've come across yet. The guy stabbed his finger at the page and said "too young". I said "er, no, my date of birth shows that I'm 26". He just waved the passport in my face, stabbed at the page again and said "no, photo, too young". !!!!!!?! I said "the passport was issued 9 years ago, of course I was younger in the photo than I am now!" He just shook his head, put the wine on a shelf behind him and called the next person in the queue! I tried reasoning with him pointing out that I was legally old enough to buy the wine but he completely ignored me and started scanning the next person's shopping like I wasn't there. I was fuming by that point and really embarrassed as I think the rest of the queue thought I was trying it on! I really don't think some staff are intelligent enough to grasp the basic concept of IDing someone. I really feel like making a complaint but it probably wouldn't make any difference.

No, you should have made a fuss there and then and got the shift manager to sort this plonker out. If they cant even read a date of birth on a government issued document, whats the point of it being issued and Tesco asking for ID?

    incredible.

    I've already explained this.

It's basically there to help the sales assistant. If they think the person could possibly look like they MIGHT be under 25, then ID them.

If they told staff to only ID anybody who looks like they might be under 18, a lot of older looking 15 year olds could be buying alcohol, so it minimises the chance of mistakes.

I don't know why everybody is getting so angry about having to pull out a piece of plastic with a date on it. It's not hard.

If you were in the same situation, where making a sale could land you with a criminal record, a heavy fine AND on the unemployment line, do you really think it's worth the employee's time to NOT ask and take that risk?

Especially as trading standards purposely test shop with people who don't look their age (tend to look older) to catch them out.

I understand the frustration of refusing sale to a parent with kids, because that is dumb, but really, getting asked for ID takes no more time than it does to fish out your tesco card and debit card.

Whenever I have seen them do it on TV they have always said that they have to use people that look their age not someone who looks older but isn't. There also not allowed to lie so if you asked them their age they have to say 16/17 or whatever not 18+.

The same thing happened to my OH last night, except he was the person serving.

Some guy came in with a passport with a date of birth saying 1990 - so he would be 18/19 now. However the passport was 9 years old so the kid in the picture was about 10.

OH couldn't serve this guy because he couldn't say that the kid in the picture was the same person as the teenager standing in front of him.

But there's a vast difference between looking as young as 25 and looking as old as 25, isn't there?

You might come across a youthful-looking 40 year old, but surely, common sense tells you that, even though they might look young for their age, perhaps even as young as 25, there's no way on earth they are under 18?

It's astonishing that all of these shop staff really don't seem to get it.

So, clearly, people should now be paying to renew their entirely valid passports? Especially if they want to buy alcohol at Tesco, where people have been told that even a driving licence is not good enough ID.
